My friend and I are picking up our flashes today. I am getting the Canon Speedlite 580EX II and he is getting the Nikon SB-800 AF Speedlight. This might be a silly question, but will we be able to use one as a slave for the other or are they completely not compatible? Any insignts?

In eTTL & iTTL no chance. I THINK that 800 has an optical slave, so with the 580 on Manual (otherwise the pre-flash eTTL will fire) it should work. You MIGHT be able to use in eTTL & optical if you keep the power down as the 800 could fire twice (my older SB26's will do that < 1/4 & new batteries). Other wireless like Pocketwizards or the ebay cheapies would also work but again all manual.

Edit: I forget the updated 580 has a pc port.... you MIGHT (WAG) be able to do something with a male/male PC chord between them but I remember some issues with that pc port on the 580... something about not active when the hotshoe is used... hit google or ask over @strobist.

You might be able to use the SB-800 as a slave to the 580EX if the EX
is manual mode and doesn't send any pre-flashes, or..... you send the preflashes before the actual exposure. I don't know how to do that with a Canon camera, but it can be done with Nikon cameras. Then you set the SB800 to SU-4 mode and it should pick up the other flash and fire at the same time. Of course the SB-800 flash output would have to be set manually.

Edit: 58 seconds slow. :)

He even triggered the flash himself and ran
around to be in the frame without using the
time delay feature on the camera!
