Took this shot this morning.
Is this the best I'll be able to do with the G3?
I know it's grainy, I tried at iso 50 and 100 this is the best.
Full digital zoom.
I like the colour gradiations. I think that's the best part of this shot.
Used PS7 Despeckle 6 times, USM after resizing, other than that it's as is. |

| You don't really get anything by using the digital zoom, you could as well take the shot (full optical zoom) and crop it later. Don't actually understand the question, "the best you can do with the G3", what were you trying to achive that the G3 couldn't do? |

You can get teleconverters that attach to the G3 and magnify things, but you'll also need a lensmate for that.

Well, even G1 can take very good shots, for example look at this one.

If the gainyness (sp?) is the problem I would say first thing is to not use Digital zoom. Digital zoom just blows up the image by enlarging the pixels so to speak and it always gets grainy. In my work with Video the first thing to do when you get a camera is turn off the digital zoom if you want to use the footage for broadcast or professional applications. When you use the digital zoom you lose resolution and quality. Other then that I guess I'd need a more specific question as to what's wrong with the image.
Hope this helps
Todd

Do you think the teleconverter is worth the money?
I've had bad experiences w/ other add on things like that for other cameras,, very little benefit for a lot of money.
I'm trying to take night shots of the moon,,and capture the surrounding colours.
I didn't know that about the digital zoom. thank you that helps tremendously.
I'll try again tomorrow morning and see if w/o the zoom it looks better.
I've got SO much to learn.
you all are great. |

I've got the Canon 1.75x teleconverter for the G3 and I think it is worth the money. It really helps get in close to a subject. I've used it for moon shots previously. When I get home tonight I'll post some to this thread so you can get an idea.

Digital zoom is no different from cropping in Photoshop, so it's really useless.
If you are trying to take pics of the moon, your best bet is to get an adapter and shoot through a telescope. If you really want to get into astrophotography, there are dedicated CCD imagers for telescopes, but that hobby gets expensive VERY fast.
Also, to reduce random noise, you can steal a trick from astro-photographers (at least that is where I got it) and take multiple shots of the same image and "stack" them as layers in PS. once you have them all stacked, you just set the opacity of each layer to 100%/(the # of images layered). This helps the random noise cancel itself out. Though for the moon, you may need a telescope mount that will track the object as it moves across the sky (aka an equatorial mount).
If you just want to get moderately closer, try the teleconverter for the G3.
I know the G5 has built in noise reduction for longer exposures, I would expect that the G3 does as well.

I was going to buy a 2x teleconverter for my G2 but then I won a grand and decided to buy a dslr instead :) The trouble with the teleconverters is that a lot of them cause a fair bit of distortion, and also create coloured halos around the images. You have to look very carefully for high quality products.

Thanks everyone.
It's night sky shots I'm interested in, not just the moon per se , well night shots in general I guess.
So I'll look into the teleconverter. I actually have a telescope w/ equitorial mount. Haven't drug it out 'cause I'm living in the city at the moment. Did use it when I was out in the woods though and way fun. |
