ok so i was doing a snowbaord photoshoot today and i saw and spoke with a dude shooting for a magazine there he had
a monolight and 2 strobes...
monolight im not sure of but the strobes im almost positive were sunpak 555 and a 250
he firstly reccomended the sunpaks over canon strobes... why?
also im interested in purchaseing a fairly portable monolight and battery system...any good suggestions?

Sunpaks = cheaper, so you can buy more.
Sunpaks are the bread and butter of the strobist.

Radiopoppers will be out soon. Cheaper then pocketwizards.

Alien bee and their Vagabond battery deal. Where you want a monolight (ab) or their pack and head system (zeus) is up to you. For you use I'd lean toward the pack and head setup as it's more versatile for location work (pack can weight the stand, less weight on the stand or a bogen clamp on a railing, etc) but less useful in the studio (cords everywhere, less weight to balance a heavy softbox, etc)

Sunpaks are cheaper and get the job done. You don't need the fancy gubbins in a flash if you're familiar with controlling light. Also, if something falls over and dies you spend a lot less money having it replaced, and if you're doing regular work in that kind of environment then I would take that into consideration.

what is the average lifespan of a battery charge? also which light should i get the zeus standard head or the Z2500BTH Bi-Tube Head im leaning toward the bitube because of its short durations... however i am going to be getting the smaller battery, so i might not beable to get full power out of it

Not sure why he would recommend the Sunpaks over the Canons. I love my Canon flashes. Maybe price is the issue there.

Why are you also wanting a strobe? I think with three flashes you shouldn't need a Alien Bee or any other brand.

the alien bee would have stronger capabilities... and i would be geting an alien be with the vagabond, Zeus 1250, standard or bi tube head and 2 sunpak 666 all synced with a pocket wizard radio popper or some other radio sync... the way i plan to light snowboarding is on a jump place the 2 sunpaks lighting the rider from behind while the alien bee directly behind the jump lighting the rider from underneath...its a cool effect

Keep in mind if you buy the radio popper you will need another wireless setup to go with it. For instance I have 2 430EX flashes and 1 580EX flash. If I want to fire them all remotely then I will need a ST-E2 transmitter to use with the radio popper.
