Hi,
I currently have the following lenses, but would like to go longer:
Canon 100 Macro
Sigma 10-20
Canon 17-85 IS
I have a wide range of photographic interests, but currently don't really have lenses suited to portrait or wildlife photography.
I had been considering getting the Canon 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS & the x1.4 converter to give 420 f5.6-f8.
Alternatively I could get the Canon 70-200 f4 L as a general purpose telephoto/portrait lens, and then get somthing like the Sigma 170-500 f5-6.3 specifically for wildlife.
What do people think?
Thanks!
Tim

1) if you put an extender on the 70-300 you'll only have AF at 70.
2) From what I've read, the 50-500 Sigma lens is better than the 170-500
Check FredMiranda.com for lens review.
You probably meant 70-200 f4L. If you get this with the 1.4 extender you'll have af throughout the range as long as you shoot wide open. |

the 100 and the 17-85 should work nicely for portrait work
also, if you plan on using an extender (1.4x or other), a general rule is to use them on a prime rather than a zoom ... image quality seems a bit better (at least, that's what "they" say)
if you know you're going to want 400mm, you aren't going to be happy with a zoom that only reaches 200mm and you'll have wasted your money ... i'd stick with getting a zoom that goes out that far to begin with |

Price level...
I can afford the 70-300 IS @ £360 straight away + the x1.4 converter next pay day! (total £510).
or
I can afford the 70-200L @£350 straight away, and then save for 2-3 months to get say the Sigma @ £400.
or
I can save for a few months to get one expensive lens that does everything. This is unappelaing though as i can justify spending about £700 on two lenses but not really on one (gulp!). Also I'd be able to enjoy using the one cheaper lens straight away....
(Sorry if you're not from the UK with my prices, but you should get a rough idea)
Thanks!
Tim

Tim - I really have to stop giving this link out . . but for Canon Lenses in the UK you will not get better prices than these. They are refurbished (as new) stock and are fully legit.
Canon Outlet
The stock changes just about everyday, and covers Lenses, Cameras, Flash Gun's etc etc.
