Howdy guys. I'll soon be taking the plunge on a 5D for an upcoming 12 month trip I have coming up with the hopes of publishing a book at the end of it.
I have the Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 on my 400d but it won't work on the 5D. Does anyone have the bigger version on a full frame camera? If so, what are your thoughts in terms of sharpness (corners included), focussing speed, color reproduction, contrast etc etc.
I have the 17-40L but i'm not the biggest fan but if all else fails, at least I have it.
Cheers guys! |

I have the 28-75 f2.8 on my Nikon D3(FF), it is an excellent lens. On my lens corner to corner sharpness at the shorter length is excellent from F4 onwards. Overall the shorter length 28-50mm is better than from 50mm upwards.
I actually compared it with the Nikkor 28-70 (I think , can't exactly remember the range) & the Tamron was more than comparable across the range.
Hope this helps. |

The 28-75/2.8 Tammy is a popular lens here at DPC. You'll get a lot of thumbs up over it. I used that lens for a long time before buying the Canon 24-70/2.8L. The only real differences were a slightly sharper image and, more importantly to me (for weddings), faster focusing speed due to the USM focusing motor of the Canon lens.
I still highly recommend the lens.
ETA: I used it first on my 20D and later on my 5D. It's a great lens either way.

WHY??? It should be great with the 5D!! Why were you told it will not work, it is an EF and not an EF-S lens..

It's designed for cameras with an APS-C (crop) sensor. |

| A Tamron 28-75 lives on the 5D at my office. We use it almost exclusively. |

So it will fit, but have a massive vignette?

The Tamron 28-75 f2.8 fits and works fine, a very nice sharp lens that works perfectly on a FF sensor, it is not designed ONLY for crop sensors. I'm not so sure about the 17-50 because I have never used one on my 5D. I believe the Tamron Spaghetti code is DII = Digital crop, but don't quote me on it.

Hi,
I got the Tamron 28-75 2.8 for Nikon.
Regardless - this lens is a full sensor lens and not meant only for DX type sensors.
Highly recommend these lens. |

The 17-50 should fit and function on a 5D, but will vignette so badly below about 22mm that it's not worth it.
Remember, the FF body has a different field of view - your 17-40 on a 5D will be like an 11-24 (more or less) on your current body.
I had the 28-75 and used it on crop bodies so I can't speak to it's sharpness/vignetting across the frame on a FF body, but I can speak to it's focus speed - slow. Slow compared to a canon with USM? Of course, but I mean slow to the point I missed focus in the studio on occasion. People laughed, and moved, and the lens couldn't keep up, focus wise.
While it's more money, consider the canon 24-105, 24-70 or perhaps even some primes - 50 1.4, 85 1.8.

i have the 85 1.8 (joey lawrence's old one), and that's defo coming with me. And yeah, i understand the crop factor thing too, so it basically looks like i'm going to use my 17-40 and my 85mm when i go traversing the tectonic plates.
Just need the 5d now...
thanks for the input though guys.
And yes, the 24-105 was on my list so hopefully I can find a decent condition kit for around $2000 because i don't have loads to spare and don't wanna spend more than $1500 on the body. |

Good luck with that price...5d/24-105 kit is $2899. Body only is $2199. If they do release a new version then it will drop, there may be rebates again, who knows.
Thought about a 40D? It's not FF, but equals or beats the 5D in all other areas these days(focus speed, speed overall, custom functions/features, weather sealing, self cleaning, HTP, IQ and most say even noise at high ISO. It and the 24-105 together are about $2200.

I'm fairly sure I can get a used 5d body for $1500. I don't really wanna buy new if i can avoid it.
I considered the 40d, but i don't want one. I want full frame and the 5d is the only viable option at the moment in my price range and the resolution i'm after.
Thanks for your suggestion but 40d won't do. |
