Lots of talk about unwanted comments and that one doesn't know when voting/commenting whether comments are desired. Well, as a commenter, I'm trying something new.
I comment on images that either strike my fancy or score low 1,2,3), but am irritated by the large number of "not helpful" responses (or actually lack of response) in the latter group. I noticed that if you click on a comment icon while viewing the current challenge entries you get the opportunity to remove your own comment. So I've decided, before the end of voting, to remove all my comments that haven't been marked as helpful.
It may not serve a useful purpose, but it makes me feel better.
I may also try commenting on images after the challenge completes, only for those people who go and mark "helpful." That would be a better use of my commenting energy. I don't vote on every image, but I comment on better than 1/3 of those I vote on. Only 75% mark my comments as "helpful", about as well as people who only comment "nice picture" get.

This has been discussed in the threads that karmat linked in her response ad nauseum but I will address part of your statement. Only giving someone a few day to a week to mark the comment helpful isn't really a whole lot of time. Some people have jobs, life, vacation or other factors that prevent them from being able to check their comments received everyday. I would refrain from deleting the comments for many different reasons but if you must in order to make yourself feel better then at least give the people a reasonable amount of time to check the comments. I tend to be perhaps a bit more tolerant in that perspective... realizing that my "Pearls of wisdom" might not be as useful as I think they are.
There truly are a variety of comments that while insightful might not be all that useful, and one currently has no options other than "Useful" to acknowledge them.
Just a thought,
Ray

Do you consider your comments to be a gift, a loan to be repaid, or unsolicited merchandise which must be paid for to be kept?
As with lending money, I never give someone a comment I can't afford to do without ... sorry, but your attitude seems a bit strange to me; to paraphrase Jerry Garcia, once you've made the comment the effort's been expended -- why care what happens to it from that point on? |

I've seen some of these. But the idea is for the recipient or someone in a supervisory role be able to delete rude comments. I've just deleted critiques (questions) and even accolades. Just because they weren't acknowledged.
And OK, maybe this is a bit extreme since the recipient may not be checking on comments until after the challenge, but I can't delete them after the challenge.
I just consider this to be a workaround for the lack of a "comments wanted/not wanted" indicator. If a comment isn't wanted, why not take it back?
Now as to my alternate approach, wouldn't it make more sense to be leaving comments after the challenge on images where 1) the photographer has shown the desire to receive comments and 2) there were few comments left?

Actually I believe you can go change your comment after the challenge is over. Click the edit comment button and erase, you may have to type a character in it's place but the comment is gone. Seems silly to me but I guess that's your right. Trevor~ |

OK, it didn't work in the "trial challenge". After it was all done, I examined the photographers of the images whose comments I deleted.75% of them had a history of marking "helpful", although most hadn't done so at the end of the challenge. 25% never mark "helpful". So removing comments is a disservice. It doesn't select out the people who don't want comments. It's no better than random.
Now to try the second approach (all comments post-challenge to those showing they want them but getting few). |
