Edit to add... ok here is a real receipe Peeps at home

That`s great. Once the shops are open again tomorrow i can get all the ingredients :-)

Sorry ;P, this is stuff that's always in my cabinets. I tend to forget that some people don't cook quite as much as me.

peep-peep!

I am so sad :-(

Went to a number of stores and they are all sold out. Just the other day they had rows of them, but today it is all empty.

Not a peep in sight.

I just ate my first "Peep" - yuck !!!!!!!

I expected sugar/marshmallow with very little taste, but I wasn't ready for that odd taste that came with it.... my first thought was oil, or petroleum, or some equally nasty chemical.

From now on I'll stick to giving them away or taking photos of them.

I have peeps in every color - just the chicks, though. I'm a purist. :o)

Apart from all the ingredients, I think the "Let the marshmallow chicks rest for approximately 4 hours to allow them time to fully set." is an additional problem right now. For me there are 2 1/2 hours left before the end of the challenge.

If I am not mistaken we all have the same amount of time before the challenge goes into vote.

ETA - I doubt I would start the project of creating my own peeps even with time not being a factor. ;)

Some people prefer them aged. Gives them a whole different texture and flavor. Just leave one lying around for a week or two and then try again.

I did see some "cocoa" Peeps the other day. That's just wrong. Peeps must always be covered in sugar tinted some unnatural color. Gives them that special food coloring flavor ;-)

Reading this thread I've learned something new that I find quite disturbing...
People actually EAT those things???!!!

That's not correct. As noted in the challenge rules, challenges begin and end at midnight, Server Time, which corresponds to US Eastern Standard/Daylight Time. This means (currently) that the challenge began at 5:00 AM your time (CET) this morning, and ends at 5:00 AM your time tomorrow morning. This will, of course, shift by an hour when Central European Summer Time begins next week.

Of course!

What, did you think that all we do is chill out with our peeps?

Doesn't it depend on the time when you read all the messages? And hey, it's easter, and to quote MAK: eat eggs with children, leave the damn camera alone for just 1 day! . But I'm curious to see if anyone will make his/her own peeps.

I ran across some orange creme flavored ones that were (I think) egg shaped today. I think that was at the 4th store I tried to find them at... so I guess nobody else wanted them either.

So it's not the camera time, but the server time that's decide if your photo is within the allowed challenge time?

That's correct. We adjust for the difference in time zones before making the determination. It is worth noting that if you submit a shot taken at the very end of the challenge (when your local date is the day after the challenge ends), you'll need to fill in the last day as the date of the photo when submitting, or else the photo will reject.

Peeps are the most disgusting thing ever invented. I can barely look at them without getting ill... I'd better skip voting on the challenge, LOL.

Ok, I just figured out what causes that disgusting tast - one of the ingredients is "Carnauba Wax" !!!!
And yet some people say they LIKE these things!

According to Wikipedia:

Carnauba wax can produce a glossy finish and as such is used in automobile waxes, shoe polishes, food products such as candy corn, instrument polishes, and floor and furniture polishes, especially when mixed with beeswax. It is used as a coating on dental floss. Use for paper coatings is the most common application in the United States. It is the main ingredient in surfboard wax, combined with coconut oil.

Carnauba wax is a prominent ingredient in cosmetics formulas: lipsticks, eyeliners, mascara, eye shadows, foundations, blushers, skin care preparations, sun care preparations, etc.

This seems to be the attitude at the moment when someone dares suggest that challenges are not open to all...not that I care to take photos of sweets!!

It IS a US only challenges, no matter how much you joke, bullshit or protest equality for all. Enjoy your challenge:)

In our family, we'd buy peeps as soon as they were available, open the package, and stick 'em in the cupboard for at least a couple of weeks, usually more. They're only good when they're very stale. My sister told me yesterday that apparently they've improved them somehow - it's taking longer for them to get stale. Don't the Peeps peeps understand a lot of people LIKE their peeps stale??

That said, I didn't buy any peeps this year so no challenge entry from me. (And yes, they had them at the American grocery store, though I'm not sure I've seen them anywhere else in Germany.)

I'm protesting this challenge for all my foreign friends
who can't find peeps. (they're out here too, dammit) :)

Now for a side challenge: In what country did marshmellows originate.
No fair googling!
03/23/2008 06:26:32 PM · #72
Okay - for all those who can't buy PEEPS, are there no critter-shaped marshmallow creatures available in just a different brand ?
03/23/2008 06:28:34 PM · #73
Ok, I'm in.

As #28 at 6:28 eastern, this is going to be a small one.

I'm there too. #29 at 14:31 Alaska time

I went to 2 drugstores today looking for peeps. They are sold out. Of course they are sold out of most of their Easter candy. And Walmart and other stores that might have some are not open today since this is a federal holiday.
