ComputerGeeks are currently selling (refurbished) 5gb microdrives for only $10 each. I know that they're slower, more battery-hungry, and less shock-proof than flash-based CF cards, but even so it seems like a great deal, especially if you don't drop your camera very often ;o)

Never mind dropping the camera, don't drop the card.

Hey, microdrives aren't that delicate - I used one for several years in my old S40 compact without any errors, and I wasn't treating it any differently than any other camera.

;oD

For most people they're probably fine and for $10, what the hay.

Wow! That looks like an amazing deal! How fast do they write, though, in CF terms? 3,600 RPM is sloooooow by hard drive standards, but then again, normal desktop hard drives write WAAAAAAAAAY faster than any CF card does. I may order one anyways just to find out :D

From what I've read, the general concensus is that the drive transfers data about the same speed as a Sandisk Ultra II CF card, which is approx 9MB/sec, or 66X in memory card terms.

A word of warning, I have used an 8gb microdrive and lost all of the data. I only dropped it 20cm from the camera to a desk.

Also, I don't know about the refurbised microdrives - but I was using a Seagate drive and it couldn't keep up with my old 20D.

Just thought I would share some advice - but you can't beat the price to size ratio! And if you take landscape images, it is not too much of an issue with write speed.
