I would say that the two cameras have very different purposes. The D300, with it's 1.5x crop factor and faster frame rate, is better suited as a sports shooter. The 5D, with it's full frame sensor and slower frame rate, is a much better portrait and landscape camera.
Keep in mind, too, that the two cameras you mentioned are several years apart. And to me, that's just further proof of how good the 5D was when it was released.

here's the requested shots of the 5D w/ 17-40...these are terrible so i apologize for lack of editing, etc, but i just don't have time right now so a lot of them are straight out of the camera.
but, the last 2 are a run through tonemapping. lol, these aren't really my style, but when i get some time to edit some up for real i'll post those as well.
this thing is WIIIIIIIIIIIDe. i can't imagine having the 10-20...*drool*

I only used the comparisons between the 5D and the D300 because of the similar pixel counts. That's all.
