| Got out of the car the other day and my camera slipped and slammed into the pavement. Luckily it landed lens first. The lens (nikon 50mm 1.8d) looks fine except a scuff mark on the side, but it won't focus at all the focus ring is stuck. I relize the cost of repair is probally around the cost of a new one. Any one have any suggestions? I was thinking of taking the lens apart to see what was going on inside I have never done that before. I can't afford to buy a new one or pay someone to fix it. Is there any sites were you can get the diagram of a specfic lens I haven't been ale to find one...again any suggestions. I am just glad my camera wasn't broken ................ |

ooooh. Yeah I know the feeling. Good thing it was just the lens. If no one gets back regarding the repair, look for a used one.
I just dropped almost a grand worth of equipment into a river off a bridge. Sounds pretty stupid and I felt stupid too. I can't give advice on the repair, but I'd suggest adding your stuff to your home insurance if you have it - it saved my but (thanks to the advice of DPC members insisting that I do it).

Hope the body is OK. Have you tried another lens on it yet?

I don't know.
Call me anal, call me scared, (just call me!!), but I don't keep my expensive camera and lens loose while traveling in the car.
Everything is in a nice tidy expensive camera bag. That bag is my storage facility. Just the thought of my equipment sloshing in the seat, or my lap, or unsecured some how makes me sick.
My advice?
Buy another $80 lens. Keep the broken one as a reminder of what happens to gear when not secured.
Buy a camera bag if you don't have one already.
Good luck.

| I dropped my best lens earlier this year and it had the same problem - no autofocus. I was surprised to find that the repair cost at Canon was about $100, much less than the lens. They repaired it quickly & it's back on my camera. I don't know what your lens is worth, but if it's more than 100 bucks it's worth a try .. |
