Has anyone used this plugin with GIMP?

//refocus.sourceforge.net/

I've found it pretty nice with certain images, just wanting to make sure it's OK within the rules of Basic editing? I think it is, but any comments? :)

As long as the tool applies to the entire image, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be considered the same as USM or NI etc. However, it'd be worth you posting a few examples of what it does, so that we can see the difference.

High Pass Sharpen applies to the entire image, but it's not legal in basic, is it?

High pass sharpen uses a different blending mode (overlay, soft, hard light). Even though it applies to the whole image it violates another rule about the allowed blending modes. If i'm wrong please correct me.

That's correct.

I agree, except that when you use HSM it can be applied to a normal layer and could be misleading. For many it could appear to apply to the entire image and you're not dealing with another layer (which would be illegal except for adjustment layers).

Whats the rule about blending modes? Can someone point me to it?

Basic Editing Rules

You may:

use only Adjustment Layers (or their equivalent). An Adjustment Layer is a special type of layer containing no image data that lets you experiment with color and tonal adjustments without permanently modifying the pixels. Adjustment Layers must be applied in Normal mode.

Ok! Sorry it took so long, it seems that my refocus plugin needed a patch to get it working properly... :)

Here's the original:
Here's the USM version:
Here's the refocus version:

USM is mostly ok, but in images like this, the shadows and such appear too strong, imho.

I did a little research on the Weiner FIR technique, and it appears to be a deconvolution algorithm. That would make "refocus" very similar to Adobe's Smart Sharpen, or plug-ins such as Focus Magic. These are legal in Basic, and I would expect that Refocus would be no different, of course if applied to the entire image.

That sounds great, thanks! :)
