That's what I think too. I only realized the other day that there are now about half a dozen people giving out awards. I thought the idea of posthumous awards was brave and clever and stood for standing against pedestrian tastes... then everyone started doing it. :-P Kind of like counter-culture eventually becoming mainstream. |
I agree and unless they are "awarded" during the challenge they hold little credibility and all we end up with is a mutual recognition society. |

You said "then everyone started doing it". Well, if you check the original "Posthumous Ribbons of the Week" thread (here), you will see that De Sousa had this to say:
So, after each challenge, you are encouraged to post here your personal winners, photos that did not won a DPC ribbon and are not align with the masses taste, but won your heart instead.
I believe he meant "everyone"....not just a select few.

Yup. You just have to go down to the 3rd post in the thread to see someone other than posthumous posting their favorite. As for the creation of more awards I believe posthumous is the one who encouraged it.

That has little to do with about half a dozen people now giving out their own branded awards. More power to them, and they can build community that way and it's very fine and well and I otherwise have no objections. I was merely pointing out that I personally admired posthumous' original intent (and believe I remember how it came about), and I personally don't feel the same affinity for the others. |

I think that means I need to apologise to you for not apologising profusely for my mistake. So I regularly apologise to you, and to glad2badad (and everyone else affected by this mistake) I am so unbelievably sorry for my mistake and I can only hope that you can find it in yourself to forgive such an unforgivable act of stupidity. I have of course taken a dremel with sanding head to both my L series lenses and all over the sensor on my 30D as the law states on my planet. I throw myself on your mercy and beg you to allow me to keep my old rolls Velvia, which I just keep around for the smell of the cans and promise to never load into any camera of any kind. Again, my deepest apologies for my misleading post and wish you a speedy return to factually correct knowledge acquisitions.
Your most humble of hunchbacks,
Quasimojo
- off to charge up the dremel :(

Hey! I used to do some of those, and had recently thought about starting back up. :-)

Appears to be accurate. Here's the third post from that thread:

Sorry, I misunderstood there. I was thinking that he thought no one should be giving out awards other than posthumous.

Just my own 2 cents on the subject: I do like having some programs here to recognize efforts that don't win ribbons. My "Peace" entry was not a great photograph, but I was pleased to get recognition from Posthumous for my out of the box take on the subject. Not everyone saw the relation to the subject. Having said that, I do agree that having numerous "ribbons" could have a Flickr-like effect, where I have received plenty of "awards" for stuff I really don't consider outstanding. (I usually ignore those, though if it is merely an invitation to post to a group, with no strings, I will sometimes do so)
Hmmm... I could give out an award for most creative effort to shoehorn in something that just does not fit the challenge theme.
Nahhhhh.

Yeah I was agreeing with you. I've also given out some awards in that thread so I couldn't possibly argue against doing that.

Just out of curiosity, do the owners of user awards give them to their own personally voted top 3...or under appreciated images? One small addition to the site might be nice (to help support it) - a page listing the criteria for each award (similar to the DPC User Apps page) for reference..
