I use a Spyder 2 monitor calibrator, R2400 and the newest profiles, but I seem to get a photo that is slightly darker than on my screen. Also I see a red hue if I use the Premium Luster instead of Ultra Premium...i dont have a premium luster profile on my CS3. anything i can do?

What settings are you using? Is Colour Management being done by CS3? Is ICM off in the printer driver? Do you have all the up to date profiles from Epson?
03/18/2008 12:56:16 PM · #3
I have color managed by Adobe, ICM is on for printer, when ICM is on for printer i pick the profiles that match the paper...but when turned off for printer it seems to be even more off in color. I do have the newest driver though. Also use Adobe 1998 for color.

If managed by CS3 you need to turn ICM off in the printer driver.

The printer profile needs to be selected from CS3 in the colour management section of 'Print with Preview'.
03/18/2008 12:59:20 PM · #5
why is the coloring off on the print though when ICM is turned off?
03/18/2008 01:01:03 PM · #6
Probably because the incorrect profile is selected for the printer in CS3. If you turn it on in both places you are double profiling, hence the red cast.

Can you post a screen shot of your Print with Preview screen so we can see the settings?
03/18/2008 01:02:29 PM · #7
how do i go about doing that?
03/18/2008 01:04:26 PM · #8
With the print with preview window open and active: (I hope you're on a PC)

1) alt-print screen (this copies the active window to the clipboard)
2) create a new file in photoshop
3) ctrl-c to paste the screen shot
4) save as jpeg
5) upload to portfolio

Ok here it is before I change it....like i would normally print but with the glossy instead of luster

That's the print driver window. We'll look at that later.

We need to see the print with preview window from CS3. (the window that pops up before you click properties)

sorry... i believe this is what you are talking about?

03/18/2008 01:20:08 PM · #12
the two screenshots you uploaded show that you are using both the printer and CS3 to profile (double profiling). On the printer setup, check the box right under ICM where it says Off (no color adjustment). That will allow CS3 alone to handle the profiles.

Also, turn off high speed in the print driver. With some papers that can cause streaking in the print.

I believe there's a better set of profiles available where there's a separate profile for photo and best photo for each type of paper (at least for the R1800 there is). These would be more specific profiles.

Try "unchecking" High Speed.

I use Premium Luster with my R800 and I usually lighten the picture just for printing. I get very close but there's a little guess work involved.

The guys in the printing department at B&H also suggets using Perceptual NOT Relative.

Also try using Adobe RGB 1998 in the Input Profile and then selecting Premium Luster Paper two screens later.

Hmmm...I've never had that happen with my 2400. If it is a problem with some papers (not sure I understand why, since there is no contact between the surface of the paper by the printhead) I wonder why Epson has highspeed on by default?

Usually the thicker papers like velvet or watercolour would have this problem. I can't remember where I read this. I always have it off so it's never a problem. As far as the default goes, I've saved custom settings so I don't have to constantly think about it.

whats the deal with not having the option for "Ultra-premium" instead of premium? because in print with preview screen I am only given the premium option as where with other screen i am only given the "ultra premium" option

High Speed ruins all my prints on the R800. Since I'm never in a rush I'll let the printer take it's sweet time.

The profile showing in your printer driver is the paper/quality specific profile I was referring to in an earlier post. This is the one that should be selected in the CS3 print with preview window. I'll have a look tonight to see if there's a way to add profiles to photoshop if the complete list isn't showing.

alright! I haven't been able to find anything myself...but i dont always know of the best places to look

thank you for all your help!

Epson does not show a profile for the Ultra Premium Glossy paper in it's very latest paper profiles for the 2400. They do show a profile for the Ultra Premium Luster. Usually, if they don't have a specific profile for a paper, they will tell you in the little info pack included with the papers just what profile to use. For instance, they at one time didn't have a profile for the Watercolor Paper Radiant White. The instructions were to use the Enhanced Heavyweight Matte profile.

The name you see in the printer driver is the name of the file. In the dropdown in CS3, does that same filename show up? It's probably further down the list than the one you chose. Just scroll down.

I have CS2, not 3, but it finds its paper profiles in WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color. Copying your profiles to that folder (Win XP) should allow PS to find them.

The printer driver is finding them so I suspect they are already there.

It doesn't hurt to look though.
