My brother is a Nikon soul and is looking to migrate to the digital world (and stay with Nikon).... I figured I would help him sift through the options a little....
- His budget is around the $1200 USD.
- He was specifically interested in the D80 but I know there was a recent D60 I think and I know there are a couple of versions of the D70 (D70s).
- I will throw in a 50f1.8 for him cause I am a nice brother :-)
* What body would you suggest and why?
* What are the must have Nikon/Tamron/Whatever lenses for the lower end (no 200-400VR lenses okay).... |

A used D200 body is hovering a bit above and a bit below the $1000 mark. Definitely a good body, especially since it sounds like he's been shooting Nikon for a bit and probably knows what he's doing with a camera.
The 18-135 kit lens is very versatile and very cheap, but it's slow. If that 50mm f/1.8 is AF, I probably wouldn't even bother with a new lens at that point, and just save up for something cooler like an ultrawide or a fast zoom.

If he does not get the D40, he can still use the Ai lenses that he may have and be familiar with already. I think that some of the Nikon models will not meter with the older lenses though. I use a Fuji that takes the newer Nikon lenses, but the mount works with any Ai Nikkor mount lens as well.

I second the vote for the D200. I had a D80 and upgraded to a D200. Bigger, stronger, more image control, weather-sealed. The 50 1.8 is great. Start there, save for the Tamron 17-50 2.8. Or find a D200 used for $900, and instead of buying him the 50 1.8 pitch in on the Tamron. For less money, the Nikon 18-70 is a great lens, but he'll quickly be wanting the faster Tamron.
My 2 cents. |
