Most sites think they are unique... but in all the sites I've been on in all the years I've been doing online forums, BBS'es and interactive sites, all of them have shown that there are people on them that can be exceptionally giving and caring and willing to go out of their way to help a stranger. They have also shown the other type... low life, scum of the earth, trying to take advantage of everyone they can, types... as well as a whole lot of those inbetween. DPC gets fairly high marks for the first type and last type, but this site is not made up of the only people that are this way.

Well, who would have thought - a cornsnake forum! Wonders never cease.

Yeah? Check out cornsnakes.com for a great online forum. Much like our DPC community here, just centered around cornsnakes and other snakes.
I also belong to cornsnakesource.com and freedomreptiles.com.

Same user name on all of them as here!!

Thanks -- I forwarded these links to my dad, a retired herpetologist.

I'm glad to hear this. Whiterooks work is not generally appreciated by the DPC voters, but neither do they appreciate
other American treasures like Ansel Adams. It may be rooks recognition may occur after his time here on earth. But with treasures like it's just a matter of time.

OOoopS. to the Original Poster, you'll not find a better group of online people to associate with. I've been at 4 paid sites. I'm only paying at this site now. I love it.
It's got it's warts, but what part of life and living doesn't? It's also the only group that didn't figure out that I was not human. Or they're diverse enough to not care that I originally hail from the Hale Bopp comet. That rolling on the floor guy that hangs out here is a fellow Boppian. He just got here several centuries before my flight. Ahhhhhhhhh, I digress... anyway throw in and show us some images. Enter the challenges. Enjoy! Welcome!

Edit: Oh. Sorry brother, I see you're already here!

You needn't get ripped off on my account. ;-) Anyway, that's not what I asked for. I asked for someone to be a one-on-one tutor for Whiterook, but I don't think anyone took that up....

Would you settle for World Peace? LOL - I'm just kidding Whiterook - ya know I love ya!

When I get into the top twenty their will be world peace in the universe !

Whiterook you are a DPC treasure and should give lessons to all of us! I hope World Peace arrives soon than later...;-)

about world peace it remind of a show on X file Fox have three wishes from a genie. He wish for world peace what genie granted was quiet for Fox in the world. Just be careful for what you wish for!

heh. I get the funny feeling that Whiterook has had more requests for one on one tutoring than offers...

I am a member of a horse forum that (in one form or another) has done many of the things mentioned (Secret Santas, donations of time/money/things). One member runs a shelter and has had to raise money for many animals (horses and donkeys) who were in bad shape, some of whom get adopted out later. I was also the "forum representative" at a funeral for a member's husband who died suddenly.

Because it's a horse forum, it tends to be centered around animals, but includes everything from "look at my new puppy" to asking for advice to asking for prayers when animals or humans are sick or dying. Sometimes it's just for someone they know (not anyone the rest of the forum knows) - someone recently knew of a place where the barn burned down and they lost all the equipment/tack, and so people sent halters, blankets, etc.

It's also relatively small, so I can't say "I'm gong to be in ____. Let's GTG" for everywhere, but I have spent the weekend w/ 2 members (and their husbands, lol) in NY and TX, and met several others for lunch when I happen to be in town (in AZ, KS, and NY). And I'm planning to meet at least one more when I go to a conference this summer.

No, DPC is not unique. I was a member of a Jaguar forum for a number of years and the dynamic was very similar.

We had get-togethers, people would help out others in need, and just like here, people would freely share advice and information that all too often local professionals and skilled amateurs would not.

I have friends all over the world to this day from that experience.

One experience I had was when one of the other members was at my British car shop during a visit and had a major heart attack requiring a quadruple bypass before he could go home.

I took him to the hospital, visited with him, and did the best I could just to be a friend simply because that's what you do for people you get to know well.

Another guy from the forum drove himself and a friend five hours to pick up his car after I took him home.

This site has definitely done more for me than I have for it in many different ways, and I see the miracles, and just daily niceties, that are done here between friends every day.

I am forever indebted to a DPCer half my age on the other side of the continent who selflessly put up with my ineptitude and whininess and saw me through 'til I got an understanding of photography and post processing that enabled me to truly blossom as a photographer. I have since opened my own side business as a photographer and I donate time and images to a few worthy causes, which IMO is the least I can do since someone gave of his time and efforts to help me.

DPC ROCKS!!!

I was/am a member at another site where persnonal ties had become close, though it's a smaller community. I've travelled and slept on the couches and in the beds of several of the cyber-folks there, and was fed & entertained by them during GTGs. One member started his own business and hired at least three people from the community as employees, and that was about seven years ago! One sold his home and bought a new one 150 miles away to be at the new company. He actaully bought the new home and it took over a year to sell the old one, but he stuck it out.

Ditto. DPC is a fantastic community but certainly not unique in the positive community attributes mentioned above. I have been part of other online communities in which strong bonds have developed between members. There have been GTGs, of course, members have opened their homes to friends they've not met in person before (I've had many people stay at my place and have taken up an offer to stay with someone else), there have been Secret Santas, members have organised monetary or gift collections for other members for special occasions or when a member is poorly... all kinds of good stuff.
There are many who do use the internet but have never belonged to a community that displays those kinds of traits (or if so, only on a peripheral level) and therefore don't truly understand just how strong the sense of community and the bonds can be.
It's a very cool thing.

Now, its time to confess: I'm the klutz that broke her leg. And I can't verbalize how much the DPC-community helped perk up my flagging spirits.
levyj413 did much more than help raise money for flowers: He called 911 and instructed them exactly where to find me. He recruited visitors to the monument to cover me with coats to keep me warm. He followed the ambulance to the hospital. He stayed with me in the emergency room until my son arrived. He personally picked out the flowers and greeting cards and delivered them to the hospital (he instinctively knew that being away from home during this trying time was a real hurdle to climb over). He printed out all the online greetings and delivered them to the hospital the day before leaving on vacation. He made sure that I would keep on clicking away by demanding "flower shots." And all that was from ONE DPCer.
Dave, who was also there during the accident, picked up the camera and made sure it was "working". He set up tripods so that tourists wouldn't step on me. And he even snapped a pic on my camera so that I had a "memento".
After making it back home to NJ and during the very long recovery I was "checked up on" by many many many existing DPC friends. I received many many many PMs. During that time I met many many many new friends (who just happened upon Jeffrey's posted notice) and they all provided moral support.
There was a trio in Vermont (all with medical backgrounds) who having never run into me before on DPC banded together and checked up on me religiously.
Now just a year after the incident and long recovery I can answer this question easily: Hell ya, DPC is a very unique and caring community! It rocks!! Thanks again, ALL.
PS: I'm proud to call DPCers my friends. I enjoy being able to finally pitch in whenever, wherever, and however I can for others in need of support.

It would be great to hear more stories about sites like this one in the press that show the good side of the internet.

Well, this thread isn't the press, but I've personally been involved in:
- buying a new camera for a college student whose camera broke
- buying a new camera for hotpasta when his fell in the ocean because of a very scary experience
- buying flowers for someone who broke her leg
- raising money to fight Multiple Sclerosis (okay, shameless plug), getting donations from an amazing number of DPCers
- writing tutorials and learning threads and spreading what we've all learned
- buying plane tickets for someone to go to her daughter who was in a horrific car accident

and I'm about to give away my first gift membership.

And I really do feel like I'd give my guest room to any of several DPCers who happened to be in town, and that they'd do the same for me.

I regularly use DPC's community now as an example of what can happen online. If you'd suggested this to me 3 years ago, I would've rolled my eyes. Not now.
