i know i can't distort my image, or make a selection in any way in basic
but the "Vignette - darken" tool in Filter > Distort > Lens Correction is not distorting the image, just darkening the pixels near the edge of it
is this legal in basic editing or not?
i would assume it is legal, but it's under both the Filter list, and the Distort list, so it sounds fishy :P
i did a search but couldn't find anything about this tool |

No, you may not add vignette in Basic during postprocessing via any means.

But you can create it in camera. Use a long hood or stack filters etc.
Now this brings up another question. Can we fade the vignettes we create in camera in post? |

You cannot add anything that wasn't there in the first place.
In basic, the rule goes further to relate to spot editing/moving pixels. Even if it was there to start with you can't select an area of the photo to do anything. Whatever you do has to be applied to the entire image. |

What about vignetting when converting from RAW? |

Right, I hadn't thought of that no selections rule. But you can take the photo with 5 filters stacked to create one, am I right? As long as you leave it as it is? |

Yup. You can make a vignette with a cylinder of black paper or cardboard quite easily actually. A toilet paper tube works if the lens is small enough, like a P&S lens.
