Orrrrrr... you could look at it another way. A non squirel expert goes to the trouble of aquiring a humane trap, carefully transporting it a fair distance to an area known to be heavily frequented and maintained by conservation groups and patrons and gently releasing it to what he believed would be a better alternative to a sharp blow to the head... or two.
Give him some credit. Even a non squirel loving animal rights advocate can see that he DID try to do the right thing. I'm pretty sure the video was meant to document a kind deed.

Ahhh... perspective and common sense. I hereby bestow a golden nut to Slippy for his attempted humanity. ;)

Do you have a nice Golden Nut icon I can put on my profile page?

:) I have a few dusty ones in a closet somewhere. You can have one if you'll also take an old basketweaving trophy?

Dusty or not, Gold hit $1000 an ounce. You'll be making Slippy a semi-rich man with one nut. Wait... That doesn't sound right. Give Slippy a Golden Nut and he'll be semi-rich.

I thought Slippy already had a brass pair in his possession?

Did you do blood tests on the captured squirrels to insure they would not transmit diseases (squirrel fibroma, cutaneous warbles, congenital alopecia, dermatophytoses, notoedric mange, louse bite lesions) to the park population? You could have also introduced genetic defects into the park population, as well as introduced the house squirrel to genetic defects/diseases that are in the park (think Native Americans, Europeans, and smallpox on a smaller, squirrel-sized scale).

The best way to deal with damage causing squirrels is to a combination of excluding them from entering the house, removing trees or their branches that allow them access to the house, using smell repellents (such as moth balls), lethal trapping, and lethal shooting.-drew

While good advice, why does it seem that when someone has a destructive wildlife problem, authorities don't/won't help, but when you take it into your own hands, you are criticized?? If he brought the squirrel to you would you have done the tests for him???free???

Last summer I had a horrible skunk issue whereas they were digging under my garage overheaddoor and getting in. I blockaded it with blocks only for them to dig deeper and farther ...Not ONE person in animal control would help.....Everything that I tried [mothballs don't work], they laughed at my efforts as it was 'old wives tales'...in frustration I suggested that I'd shoot them if I didn't get help...SUDDENLY I was a criminal, and they would come to see if I committed this crime!!!!!. I eventually had to hire a contractor and create a concrete slab.

my point...instead of helping, they would prosecute...meanwhile I had to 'deal' with the damage...sucks to be me.

Funny point to this story...after the concrete was installed...I found some skunk poo on the concrete where they always dug...guess they had the last laugh!

I'm on your side slippy...although the animal lover in me worries whether they'll find food, the frustration of the 'intruder' in the house can be horrible.

You could have done the right thing by putting them out of their misery and recycling them.

Squirrel Decanter

lol

Someone should plant one of these stuffed squirrels in Slippy's brother's attic. Then film the video as they wait for it to be trapped. ;\

I am not sure of the authorities you contacted, but the situation you described is exactly what my job is for. I provide technical assistance, permit application help, site visits, and even direct control. And if someone called me up with a squirrel problem, I would advise them on methods to control and prevent damage. If someone brought me a squirrel to test for diseases because they wanted to release it, I would advise them against releasing it (for reasons already stated) and advise that the squirrel be destroyed.

If you called me up with a skunk problem, I would provide techincal assistance and send information packets so you could take care of the problem yourself (for little cost). By the way, most states say that you can kill wildlife that are causing damage to your property or crops. If you can't solve the problem yourself, I would advise hiring a pest control company. If they can't solve the problem I would come out and trap the skunks myself (and relocate them to a location better suited for their temperment). So look me up next time. :-)

That's unfortunate. A lot of times this only leads to a different problem with a different animal.

I hope I don't have to, but will if even for just advice on how to discuss with the local animal control. I talked to the local (NY) State Animal Control officer. I talked to the Humane Society for contact information, and I talked to an independent animal rescue. you already read my responses....

At this point the concrete worked, after they poo'd on it I haven't seen them since...but then again I would presume (?) they are hibernating now?

Doing nothing often leads to a failed season for farmers or thousands or dollars in property damage.

I know that many farmers will shoot loose dogs on sight rather than wait for them to kill a few thousands of dollars in livestock.

Problems or not. Getting rid of one varmint for another, what ever.

I still think an 80mm, long ass tube, and an enclosed rocketed projectile could be the makings of your next video.

"Squirls in Space" a film by Slippy.

It would be cool man.

Catch the varmint. Dress it in a little space suit. Stick it in the projectile. Aim the mother of all big ass tubes into the sky. Light the fuse. Step back, and watch the show.

All on video tape.

Have some background music like Elton Johns "Benny and the Jets", or David Bowies "Major Tom".

Think about it.....at least just think about it.
