would be kool to keep the front page poll relegated to a photographic type poll or a poll about the site, any other polls could easily be started in a thread...yes im talking about politics and the current poll. i dont have a problem with politics but when i come to DPC im usually escaping from those harsh realities.this is just a sugestion, pls dont bash me.

Perhaps a preference where you can check-off which topics to filter out? |

Sorry...no dig.
Some of the conversation matches your initial post...

I think there's a plan to have a poll up every week. Sometimes it will be a serious question about site functions, if we have one ready, and (more importantly) are ready to deal with any response. Sometimes the poll will be about something else. No one has to vote if not interested.
If the current question doesn't meet your needs, perhaps you all can help out by posting some potential poll questions here ... |

Should Polls be done every week?
a) Yes
b) No
I would find it humorous to have a poll about a poll. :P
Should polls only be centered around DPC decisions, or open to any topic?
a) centered around DPC
b) open to any topic
c) open to any topic, but add a check box to preferences so that you can have only polls centered around DPC show up on the homepage
Having a choice of site wide improvements or the DPL, which would you like more?
a) site wide improvements
b) DPL
c) why can't you do both!!!!!
d) the site is perfect and change is scary, please don't ever change DPC
e) DPL was dumb, I didn't use it or like it, don't bring it back
well some version of these would be nice, I figure will have a DPL question next week anyway.

We (SC) already did that -- why do you think you have a weekly poll ... ;-) |

We did? I don't remember being given a vote in the choice... or was that one of the ones I ignored?
eta; Oh.. I assume you meant that only SC got polled.. :(

I love the idea of a weekly poll, such a wonderful way to find out how other people feel about certain things.
Please keep it related to DPC (and/or photography) - there is plenty enough material in that.
No need to poll our shoe size ,religious practices or favourite colour. |

hehe, I can see the heated debate thread over the merits of the whole thing. Probably debated even having the poll about more polls for a few days too. :) |

I also would really like the poll to be related to photography or the DPC site itself. Not for me as much, as I don't mind "extra" stuff and often frequent the General Discussion forum, etc. But for those who do come here just for the photography... they can opt out of the forum sections, but they can't opt out of looking at a front page poll for a week. (At least as it is now.)
Perhaps it could be something like... photography / site related polls are on the front page as normal, and other, "shoe size" polls have a link from the front page to a special poll section? Or maybe have all polls (including phography issues but not ones where you do need to get feedback and it's important we answer) on a special page, if it is to be done every week, just to cut down on front-page clutter?
edit for clarity

There. Now it's DPC related. :-/ |

I just don't understand the purpose of the current poll and ones of that type. Will it help DPC as a site in any way? Will we get any useful information from it? Is the data at all even valid, given the wording and limitations of choices (applies for most polls, I presume)?
My feeling is that polls of this type are better off started as a forum thread, as that's where they always end up anyway as folks want to expand on their opinion/vote. |

As far as I understand (I could be totally wrong), it doesn't *really* do anything besides entertain. Which is why I like my compromise idea: go ahead and have the polls, they could be very fun and a lot of people would enjoy them - just *link* to them from the front page :-)
edit: apparently I wasn't wrong, heh.
edit again: Another idea, not sure if this is feasable, is to have the "title bar" of the poll have a clickable arrow to "collapse" the poll (like the sidebar for scrolling through portfolio/challenge entries). Only thing is that the sidebar hasn't saved my preferences for collapsed or not collapsed so not sure if that would really work. Just a thought.

what on earth does it hurt to sometimes have a fun little amusing poll on the front page?!?!

I don't have a problem with it.
I know that as long as I have been here I have been impressed with how the site has managed to compromise between what different users want. I am giving suggestions in case SC / langdon wanted to compromise in this case as well.
Also I was under the impression that it wasn't going to be "sometimes", but every week.. am I just confused about this?

Ok, I'll bite - here is my take on it:
There have been countless times where DPC members have asked for something, like a website feature of whatever. Most of the time, those requests go totally unacknowledged, SC can't even be bothered to say "We have noted your request. It has been added to the list and will be considered. Thank you for your interest in the welfare of DPC".
It doesn't matter how many people ask the same thing, how many times it comes up, in how many threads across how many years. We just get totally ignored.
So those member requests aren't even worthy of a poll to see if this IS in fact what the majority wants, and yet there is room for "fun little amusing" American political polls.
Do you really not see anything wrong with that equation? |

I think all of the improvements and changes made to DPC shows, in fact, we do acknowledge our members and their requests...larger photos and resolution, keyboard voting, HDR, better portfolio browsing, new advanced rules...not to mention the complete DPC overhaul that is in the works. We can't, however, be all things to all members and grant every single request.
The poll feature has been in place and a part of this site since it started. No coding had to be done, no extra work had to be performed. All we've done is decided to use it more. We have had several recent polls regarding photography and site related business and we intend to have lots more. Throwing in a fun poll every now and then should not be that big of a deal. Yes, this site is about photography but it's also about having fun...or it should be.
So, to answer your question...no, I don't see anything wrong with whatever equation you're talking about. I think it's perfectly fine to mix photography and the business of this site with a little fun.

I, personally, don't find them fun OR amusing. I look to that sidebar for information that I might, as a DPC member, need to know.
If we have to have them there permanently, will we at least have the choice to hide it? |
