I love Radiohead's work but I must admit Thom's live vocals lately have been a bit scratchy from the samples I've heard. I have some earlier live acoustic songs here from The Bends era that are simply stunning. I think it all depends on what mood he's in.
Jeff Buckley has so much talent and a great voice. I was watching a live show of his a few weeks back and it's a real shame he's not around to continue performing.

And I'd suggest their earlier work up to News Of The World. Of their later work A Kind OF Magic and Innuendo were my favourites!

i don't know if anyone's mentioned David Bowie yet, but i think he's a brilliant vocalist.
also, though, i don't really think of these as being great vocalists, they are great songwriters and they are my 'favorite' vocalists....

Now here is someone with very good taste!! They are all excellent songwriters and Nick Cave is a superb writer with the most haunting voice I have ever heard for a singer. |

BTW Freddie Mercury was one of the best vocalist ever. He was also one of the best songwriters/composers of all-time.

damn straight. Or halfway through it could kick in to Sad but True by Metallica.
I just love the message behind the song (show must go on), and to write a song about your own upcoming death is incredible, and to do it with such aplomb too takes more guts than i can imagine.
I think he wrote it as a message to his friends to basically say "yeah, it happened, we all knew it would but whatever, it didn't get me down and i rode the storm with my head held high".

What a spectacularly subjective thread... I'm surprised this hasn't turned into an argument yet :P...
Personally none aside from Bob Dylan (and maybe Jim Morrison) in this thread have tickled my fancy for vocals...
I'm a little partial to Tom Waits though... so I guess I've got no place here :P. |
