What tips can other 10D users give me for improving Auto-Focus accuracy?

I have the following Canon and Tamron lenses:
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L IS USM
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 II
Tamron SP AF 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di LD Aspherical IF for Canon
Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon

The Canon 50mm 1.8 II is usually spot-on, the other Canon lenses back-focus about 10-20 percent of the time. The Tamron lenses back-focus about 40-50 percent of the time (especially indoors). When the Tamron lenses get the focus right, they are very clear.

I have confirmed this using:
//www.focustestchart.com/chart.html
//photo.net/learn/focustest/
The photo.net article talks about front-focusing. My problem is always back-focusing. The Tamron lenses from one to several inches, depending on the DOF and Distance to Subject.

Outdoors landscape is not a problem, but indoors or close-up I get inconsistent results. Using flash (SpeedLight 430/580) does not seem to make much of a difference.

I shoot mostly in

mode using center AF point.

I have considered sending the camera for calibration, but since the Canon lenses seem to focus OK most of the time, I'm not sure I am dealing with a calibration issue.

Is this typical for the 10D, and especially with Tamron lenses?

Are newer bodies like the 350/400 or 20/30/40D much better at auto-focus?

Suggestions?

THANKS...

Finally solved my 10D focus issues - bought a 40D.

Makes a huge difference when you can have AF confidence. Love the nice tight focus points!

I figured out after doing alot of web sluthing that the focus area on the 10D is twice as large as the red indicators in the view finder. And it seems to work from the outside in. So, lots of ears in focus instead of noses.
