Hi all,
A week or so ago, I attempted my first-ever photography of an indoor (available light) sporting event.
The light was not quite bright enough for the speed and aperture that I manually set. Therefore, I had to capture the RAW images shown below using ISO 3200 on my Canon EOS 40D.
The low noise that this camera produces at the high of an ISO is phenomenal!
Also, being the âmanualâ person that I am, I manually calibrated the white balance with a grey card prior to the game. I have an 8-1/2 x 11 grey card that I brought with me. I walked out to the edge of the basketball court, placed it flat on the hardwood, and took a full composition shot of it. I used that image to set my white balance. The temperature was about 3350 Kelvin on the gym floor.
. .
.
(this was the lens I used)

No, I did not use the High ISO Noise Reduction feature of the 40D. The main reason is because I wanted to use the 6.5 frames per second continuous mode.
On the topic of in-camera noise reduction (either High ISO or Long Exposure), these features have negligible effects on noise, according to one review/test that I read about recently. I will have to search around to find that article. When I find it I'll post a link to it here.
