OMG...saw Paul Rogers at Christmas time and his voice has NOT aged one bit. (He was in TX, so Trans Siberian Orchestra brought him onstage to do a few. WOW! Still crystal clear and very strong. I was very impressed that he still had the pipes. |

Is it coincidence then that Paul Rogers has been touring with the remnants of Freddie's old band and they are actually recording an album together?

I was right there with you until you got to the Journey part. ;-)
I would replace Journey with Rush and replace Kansas with ZZ Top |

Led Zeppelin should be in that list, ahead of Journey. (I would remove Kansas, and would not even consider ZZ Top). ;-)

The Beatles are overrated and overhyped. My top 5 classic rock bands would be Led Zeppelin,Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater,Steppenwolf, and Queen |

I am a big Queen fan, have been since 1973 when Seven Seas was released, also liked former band, Smile. Freddie was really good showman, however, George Michael sounds very like him when doing Queen songs.
Paul Rodgers has the ideal Blues voice, listen to the Tribute To Muddy Waters Album.
Robert Plant is awesome, enough said!!
Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden has that Metal sound, as does Joe Elliott of Def Leppard.
But Jim Morrison takes my favourite medal, although I have just scratched the surface of best vocalists category!! |

If you want to appreciate Freddie's voice then you need to find a copy of the "Freddie Mercury - The Solo Collection" box set (the 10 disk one, not the 3 disk set). There are some CD's on that where they have demo versions and outtakes. There is one in particular where he's doing Barcelona (I think) and they overlay the vocals from 3 or 4 takes as he tries to get it exactly right. it sounds almost like a single take he is so spot on each time.
It's those disks in the box set that I find best as they show a great insight into the artist and the process of getting the final track exactly how they want it.
Edit: After posting this I had to drag that track out and listen to it. That song still gives me goosebumps when he hits the line "The moment you stepped into the room you took my breath away"

This is great. Y'all just kicking around thoughts of greatness. Funny thing, though, so far, it seems nobody is willing to go much outside of classic rock. Freddie was great, but let's stretch the horizons a little bit:
I've seen Josh Groban mentioned. Incredible, verstile, strong.
Old guys, before "our time": listen carefully and quietly to Nat King Cole some time. Dean Martin. TOM JONES! Perry Como. And yes, Mel Torme. Mel had tremendous range, velvety textures, and could pound those drums!
Freddie was at the top of his genre, with very few peers. How about country stars? MoTown? Broadway?
Just stirring it up a little.

Get some classic Queen for sure. Greatest Hits vol 1 is a must have.
You can't go wrong with a Greatest Hits from most of the bands mentioned. CCR have a good single-disc GH package. A multi-disc GH set might start to stretch you if you are new to the genre.
Another good bet would be to hunt out a Classic Rock complitaion. |

Mike - Yeah, Man. Stretch it OUT! No borders, no lines. "Good music knows no boundaries"
Oh, and another of the tragic early deaths : "Ladies and gentlemen, the incomparable Mama Cass..."
Sorry, didn't mean to overtake the Freddie discussion, just adding a dimension of larger dimensions...

OK I did grow up on ZZ Top. Still Billy Gibbons is one of the best blues guitarists I've ever heard. And that's from someone who also grew up on Jonny Winter (Beaumont, Texas) and Stevie Ray Vaughn (Austin, Texas). Actually the best guitar play on the planet is this cat from Austin, Eric Johnson.
Kenny Rogers is from Houston but I don't like him at all! ;-) |

You heathen!! You cant even spell Def Leppard properly! The Rolling Stones? Are you serious? I agree with most you name, but come on, The Stones don't even make a mark here! |
