| OK, now I have stopped laughing my arse off, I think the snoot thing must be for pointing the light more directly at something, so you have a beam like a flashlight. that is my best guess, but I could be wrong lol |

That is correct. A snoot is designed to prevent light spillage. You would use in instead of the softbox or umbrella.
BTW I want to see photos of the setup one you get it all put together. I'm trying to decide what to purchase and this setup sounds like fun. :)

| well I think, I'm not sure but I think if you use the barn door you don't use the umbrella, and if you don't use the umbrella then it had a hole that you stick it in and can tighten it.. |

| well you have to be able to stick it into a hole, but I could ony find the barn door to do it to as the others now have the soft boxes on them |

I have no idea what you girls are doing, but it is a fun read.
Here is an example of a snoot. I also used a bit of tape on the end of the snoot to help shape the light and to keep the light from spilling onto the facial area.

Originally posted by Photomom1981: Well i need to buy SOMETHING this week. like I said I want it to kinda play around and learn with. But i do do a few little things outdoors, with kids and such. And I landed a daycare job.. and i was asked/told I was wanted to do a high school sporting team.. SO does anyone have any recomendations. i am okay with buying less now and spending more later to "upgrade"
i know the set up I asked about is bottom of the barrel equiptment but would it get the job done? someone told me that yes the lights weren't great but all the other quiptment that you get with it was worth the $300. I can't spend more than $400 right now.
also for you professionals out there, what do you usually charge for day care? or for a sport team that is only 9 people? and when someone asks you to put a bid in on a jr high school prom ( which i didn't take) but if asked again, what exactly does that mean?
I don't know a thing about lights, what any of it actually does, what's good quality, what's not. This is my hobby, and I used to just take some pics for free when people asked and slowly more and more are asking and so finally a friend said i needed to charge for my time, so i slapped a little $55 fee on there and got in contact with a printing company charge pretty much a $1 profit on the printing and now I have tons of people calling me wanting me to do pictures.. |
Stellar 300ws kit $507 at B&H. Includes 2 good strobes, stands, cords, umbrellas - and it will last you for years and years. You'll want better stands at some point for stability reasons, but this is a good, solid kit to start with.
I know you are flattered to get paid to shoot pics, but you need to charge a living wage. The way sports works is the LEAGUE hires a photog and usually get a percentage of the sales. Natoinally, the average sports sales is around $19. The younger the kids the higher the average and the higher the buy-rate (not every kid buys).
It's normal for events to get $10 to 15 for an 8x10 (or any unit). They cost $1 from a pro lab if you shop a bit and handle color correction yourself. You can pay triple that if you let the lab do more of the work.
On a prom you tell them to build a backdrop and generally you give 2 5x7 in a little cardboard frame thing - about $2.50/couple for all that. The charge ($15 to 20) per couple is part of the prom ticket. You will need a second person at the shoot to track this image is what couple. Package everything per kid and let the school deliver it. Couples don't last, so you package per kid. You can sell other things at the event as well - get paid when they order, never ever upon delivery, unless you like owning pics of strangers.
You need backup gear. Stuff breaks, gets dropped - it's life. YOu can't be in the middle of the daycare or prom and suddenly have a strobe fail, a lens quite focusing, etc, without a backup.
You cannot do a prom or daycare without business insurance unless you are insane. A kid gets hurt and you will lose your house, your car, your cameras and probably your income for the next 20 years. Yeah, the odds of one kid knocking over a light onto another is rare, but can you possibly imagine what the school and parents would do to you? Even a minor medical issue these days will mean a hospital visit and that will get very costly very quickly. And get a business license or your insurance won't be valid as you'll be operating illegally. And no, your homeowner's won't cover you.

The light will have a socket for a cord, a sync port. most are 1/4" headphone plug, but some are smaller 1/8" size.
From you pic looks like you have a wireless receiver - so the other end of the cord from teh light will go to that.
The transmitter goes on the camera.
Put the camera in M mode, 1/125 and F8 ISO 100 or 200(basic starting point for studio shooting with strobes) and turn everything on and see what happens when you push the shutter button. Start with the lights at 1/2 power and then adjust things from there.
In theory, the item on the hot shoe will send a trigger signal to the light with the receiver and the flash will go off. Most flashes have an 'eye' that will set them off if they see anohter flash go off, unless you plug in the mini/phono plug then that will disable the 'eye'.
