Use an image recovery software to recover lost data and then use the factory specs. (the software will have this) to format the CF card. By any chance is this card a "eFilm PRO" made by Delkin Devices? If so that could be the problem. I have found that their cards get corrupt. Buy a Lexar with a 133x write speed.

I got the r03 error for the first time this weekend, too. Stumped me for a minute but what I eventually did that fixed it was remove the battery and memory card at the same time, replace the battery and turn it on without the memory card, turn it off and insert the memory card, and then turn it on and all was well.

this post saved me - I was using a new card and thought it was damaged. I reset the lens and it worked perfectly. Much better than trying to get information from Nikon site.

I have this problem, but only when I'm using the built in flash.
I can take pictures without flash, but as soon as I'm trying to use it, I get r03 first try and second try the camera freezes and I can't access any menus or take pictures without the flash either.

Tried everything in this thread, but nothing seems to solve it.
Any ideas?

Sorry for starting such an old thread again, but better than a new on the same subject.

The problem with my flash is solved.

CSM menu -> No CF Card? -> Enable release -> OK

Took the CF-card out, took a couple of pics and put the card back in. Works just fine again!
