First shot... good question. My first real macro lens was a 35mm (yes, 35mm) 1:1 macro lens made by Steiheil for the Exakta mount that I bought second-hand in about 1980. I still own it, along with it's 135mm brother. I used both lenses a lot, but most of the shots I did with them are stored away on old slides. Someday, I'll scan some of the better ones. Yeh, another project. Perhaps in retirement? |

My first Macro lens was the 120mm for the Pentax 645 (drooling just thinking about the sharpness).
I think my first photo with it was a macro of my ficus tree.

My first shot with a true macro lens on my D70s was the ring of the girl who let me borrow it to try out.
My first shot with a P&S macro capability was of big yellow and black spider about an inch away.
The P&S shot was much better than the shot with the $300 macro lens. :-\ Inexperience. |

Like others, my first macro was on a film camera. Minolta 9000 if memory serves me correct. I've not scanned any of those slides. But one of the very first shots with my first macro for digital was...
D70 with Sigma 180mm F3.5 with SB600 off camera using CLS system. Have fun with your new lens. I want to get one of those in the future. |

If you don't use a tripod, sometimes it works better to set the focus at the 1:1 point. Then slowly lean in toward the subject until the focus is perfect.
Having to focus and maintain your stance is sometimes a bit much. If you do a lot of macro, you'll probably get a tripod. Have fun. |
