I just bought a new camera this afternoon.

I went for a real big tool: Sony DSC-U30!

I have not yet taken a shot with it (nimh batteries are charging) and I hope I will not be shocked by the poor quality of the images (I wonder what such a tiny, probably plastic, lens can do).

However, the design of the model is superb, like most Sony stuff, and the Blue version which I chosen is super-sexy.

The size, the most important factor why I bought such a model, is worth of James Bond pocket. ;)

So, why is this post under Web Site Suggestions?
Because I tried to add this camera to my profile and I discovered that I could not (the closest model available in the list is the U20).

So the suggestion is actually to add it to the list. ;)

Wonder if I win my first ribbon with it and I cannot reference it!!! =))

Congrats on the new camera. For anyone looking for "James Bond-ian" camera, be sure to check out the Pentax Optio S4. It is only 83 x 52 x 20 mm and 115 grams. It fits inside an Altoids tin and is 4MP with 3X optical zoom to boot!

(You can see a picture of the original 3MP Pentax Optio S in the Altoids tin here.)

Thank you. That's wonderful.

Last night I submitted one of my very first pics with it to the "All Alone" challenge and, initially, I did pick the DSC-U20 (being the DSC-U30 not avail, now I corrected it). In fact, the differences between the two models are very minimal. It looks like if its just about a convex mirror which has been added on the front of the DSC-U30 so that the photographer can point to himself before taking a shot and, maybe, about the compatibility with the new Memory Stick Pro (but I am not sure that the U20 was not compatible already).

Thanks Eddy. This is an website which compares some:
UltraCompacts

Another interesting one not in that list is the:
Pentax Optio 33WR which is waterproof!

However, considering the prices and the fact that the U30 is not only supersexy but possibly the tinest one, I am very happy with it.

I took few shots so far and I am quite happy with the quality.
Of course, no way it can be compared with the Carl Zeiss Lens on the F707, but considering how small the camera is, it is a kind of miracle it can produce such pictures.

The only real "defect", of which I was aware, it is the short life of the batteries. The user guide claims 150 shots with a couple of AAA, but in my first session they run out after 51 shots. Maybe the batteries were not well charged, but I had the impression that they were ok and that the camera just eates them.

Initially, I tought that to carry other batteries would have reduced the portability of the camera but then, when I saw the actual size of the AAA, I realized that another 4 of them can be easily carried in any pocket.

Maybe it should not be considered a real camera. Just a toy.
But it can be pretty funny! And it adds another dimension to photography.

I've been pretty happy with my Optio. I'd recommend it highly.
