So I'm taking a video of my cat with my Canon SD1000 and move in for a close-up. He's lying down and is in a pretty good mood. As I'm backing away he winds up and takes a swing at the camera, connecting with the lens and stripping off the cover. Pieces go flying...

I was able to recover all but I think one tiny spring, but couldn't get the lens shutter mechanism to work (even if I had the other spring, they're so small I doubt I could install them). Fortunately none of the parts are actually broken. The camera and lens still work fine, but its not much of a pocketable camera if you can't put it in your pocket (lens now exposed to scratching).

I've had the camera for a little over 3 weeks...do you think Canon would honor the 1 year warranty for this?

I'd post the video of the events unfolding, but I don't have anywhere to post it online.

Sorry to hear.

Yeah, and I bet your dog ate the registration card, too ... ;-)

That's pretty amazing luck -- I guess it wouldn't hurt to try sending it in for warranty repair -- perhaps you needn't burden them with every little detail of how the problem arose ...

How about sending the cat in instead?

Did you see how black your cat's eyes got as you closed in?
That's for sure a Danger Will Robinson sign.

Sorry about the camera.

"Canon Service dept? Yeah - it just fell off - honest"

Wow, that must've been some p.o'd kitty...I'd try for the warranty, send the videolink to Youtube too so they can see it really happened that way. Surely it would fall under act of nature, like a deer jumping out in front of your car.

I used Canon's website to report the problem - its going to be fixed under warranty.

(to Mo) I've found that most orange cats look very similar...according to my vet, the vast majority of them are males as well.
