Proof that I'm not crazy! At least, not about having some unknown error that no one (and seriously, NO ONE) has ever even heard of before.
My D300 gets a strange error occasionally: when I take a picture and the image appears on the back LCD, if I immediately zoom in (say, to check my sharpness and exposure, which is what I usually do), the colors seperate. For example, a blue blob may be floating around. Move the blue blob to one side a bit and it would fit over the image and thus be normal. The image appears black and white except for the blobs of color. I also lose the ability to pan vertically in the zoomed picture.
* Note that the image itself is not harmed. It is fixable by zooming back out to the thumbnail view, and then I can even zoom back in again. It's just very annoying because the camera hangs up for a few seconds before I can do ANYTHING again.
Here's the images. Notice the blue blob and the black and whitish areas next to it. You can also, I believe, see the part of the picture where the color actually lines up. The pictures are taken with a Canon, which is why they're bad :P
My bork'd D300
If anyone DOES know what's going on and it's an easy fix, LET ME KNOW!!! Otherwise, I may have to send it to Nikon, which would be sad because I'd have to use a borrowed D200 until it gets back.
EDIT: Forgot to mention things I've tried that have no effect on the camera doing this. Here they are: CF card makes no difference; MB-D10 grip makes no difference; lens makes no difference; batteries make no difference; shooting stuff like ISO, WB, Continuous, flash, etc, make no difference... I think that about sums it.

Wish I could help. My D300 has trouble moving through the display in backwards order, but nothing like this. Remember: don't panic. :-)

Were the different CF cards you used the same manufacturer and size?
If so, I'd try another brand, type, speed, etc.
Read your manual and do a master reset of the entire camera. Don't have a D300 so don't know how to do this but some times this will settle down a funky condition.
Otherwise:
Get this camera back to Nikon before your warranty expires. Be sure to include you pictures and try to get bigger ones if possible. Also be sure to tell them what CF cards you're using and the whole story you've told here. I suspect they'll find it for you and get it back quick.
Good luck. |

| Do you have the firmware upgrade installed? If so, did it do this before the upgrade? |

Forgot to mention that I HAVE done a total reset and I HAVE done the firmware upgrade.
I doubt it's the card. Both of mine are Sandisk Extreme IIIs, one of which is a 2gb and one of which is a 4gb. That's one of the highest quality cards on the market; my Nikon buddy Steve (he works at a National Camera) has never, EVER heard of a Sandisk Extreme being bad, and he shoots with a ton of them, as well as gets to hear people's stories at work.
The camera still has its 1 year Nikon warranty; I got it shortly after Christmas.
Also, I registered it on the phone yesterday. Steve said that was bad because it means the camera is marked "used." He's seen the error with his own eyes, but said if I could document it and the camera was unregistered, he'd just give me a new one, straight up. He's currently in the process of talking to his Nikon contacts to see if that can be reversed. Otherwise... Looks like I'm sending it in, huh? :/
They take care of you at National Camera, though. He said he'd loan me one of their used D200s while my D300 is in at Nikon :)
