Apple´s iPod is a Great thing.

I found on //www.apple.com a pretty nifty accessory fot it
its a card reading adapter that you plug in the dock plug on the iPod.

there you can have a pretty handy 10-40gb storage space for photos when travelling or shooting alot not having a computer at hand.

has any of you tried that?

here is the direct link in case any of you wanna take a look at it

I heard about this.

Haven't tried it, but it's one more reason why I'm likely going to shell out for an iPod this Christmas.

Barring card failure, hopefully I'll never need to buy another Compact Flash card for my camera in it's lifespan. The 256 MB on my card buys me about 150 chots on my cam -- enough immediate storage for what I'm doing when the iPod is waiting nearby as a storage tank to clear off a full card.

Oh man, now I'm totally jealous. And also annoyed because I bought a Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen and I see now that they have the Zen Xtra which will do the same thing as the ipod. Grrr...

The Archos Multimedia Jukebox will do this too (and play videos). The X-Drive II has six card-reading slots built-in; my friend just got a 40gb X-Drive for about $230 to take on his trip to Australia.

Now we just need something with card-reader slots built in that also plays MP3s! (Besides a computer.) My Sony PDA will read Memory Sticks and play MP3s, but for the price of the largest Memory Sticks, I could almost buy an iPod (which I want to do anyway).

The Archos unit I mentioned not only plays MP3s, it will record directly to MP3 format through the stereo sound input. You can then off-load those files to your computer and edit them if necessary. It will also play video files (I forget if it's AVI, MPEG4, or both). If you buy an optional adapter, you can use it as a camcorder or VTR recording directly to MPEG4 format; burn to a CD-R and it should play in most DVD players.

Mine came with adapters to read SmartMedia and CompactFlash cards.

I've actually had some problems with getting clean transfers from the card reader to the hard disk on the Archos. It might need a firmware upgrade or something -- it was recently-released when I got it. They have some newer models as well.

I got that unit mainly for the sound recording capabilities, but if I were getting one specifically for photography I'd get a second-generation X-Drive; the card readers (6) are built-in, and you can get up to 60gb pre-configured for under $300 US, or buy the shell/OS and install your own drive.

on sale at MyDigitalDiscount
Archos Jukebox 20 (what I have). Check their newer multimedia stuff too.

We have the ipod and the gadget and it works really slick. Then the download from the ipod to the computer via firewire is likety-split. This will be great when out and about.

I heard some rumours about card -> ipod being über-slow. Can you confirm / disconfirm?

I bought an Iomagic drive at Radio Shack which looks almost like the X-Drive. Has 6 different slots and is 20 megs. I took it on vacation for a week and tranferred over 800 pictures without recharging it. It's on sale now for $179.00

It is pretty slow from card to ipod, and really drains the ipod battery.
So, not ideal, but still good for downloading a card or two while on the road.

From ipod to computer is uber-fast -- it took less than 15 seconds to download a full 256k card from the ipod today.
