hi everyone. sorry that my first post in this forum has to do with asking for help, and not the other way around.
I'm looking for a set of camera and lenses that would suit me the most as an amateur photographer.
I used to own a canon 10D and really enjoyed using it. Then college started, life got busy, so i sold that one and bought a small Leica D-Lux 3 which is the most impressive compact camera i've ever used.
However, now i'm thinking about getting back to photography and get the feeling of a DSLR back. As of now, i've come up with 3 sets of camera and lenses, but don't know which set to choose.

My budge is around $1300
set #1 : canon 40D, 28-135mm and 50mm f1.8
set #2 : canon rebel xTi, 70-300mm and 50mm f1.8
set #3 : canon 30D, 70-300mm and 50mm f1.8
or you can suggest another set.

I usually go outdoor shooting, portrait, nothing too serious. And grip is not a factor to me, because i have a small hand anyways. Oh and i like bokeh a lot.

Thank you for any advices you give.

Of the three: set 1

It has got to be set 1,

Latest Canon in that price range, with two proven lenses. The 28-135mm may not be the latest and fastest, but it is a good performer. I owned one with my 300D and couldn't really fault it as mid range lens. 50mm is a good prime.

i was leaning towards set 1 as well.. just a little bit pricy. but i think i can handle it.

Well, I was on a budget and bought the 30D about six weeks ago. I had owned one before and it never seemed to match my 300D. In the meantime, I got a Pentax K100D and really loved it. I should have bought the K10D, but...and it is a big but...it is so much easier to buy Canon/Nikon lenses and accessories, which is why I switched back to Canon.

Looking back, I never really gave the 30D enough time to show what it was capable of, this time I am taking my time and hopefully will be able to add better lenses soon. This is the crux of the whole issue, a great camera with cheap lenses will disappoint. A slightly older model with good glass will knock your socks off!

I wish I could have got a 40D, my friend has one and it is great! But outside my budget for now. I have the 30D with battery grip and the 17-85mm IS lens, and a Sigma 70-300mm APO. I like the extra weight with the grip, but have noticed that the Sigma doesn't show up quite as well as it did with the 300D. Yet, I did most of my shots with the 300D + Sigma during the summer, and light does make a difference.

Try all your sets in camera shop, then choose what feels best. Or wait for the 450D!

steve, thanks for sharing your own experience!
i was thinking like that too, which is why i wanted to get the 30D or xti with the slightly better 70-300mm lens (right?).
but yeah i've read reviews about the 28-135, and the comments were mostly positive.

I'd say #1 (that's coming from someone shoots with Nikon)

well the 28 - 135 is considered wide angle, dependes on which 70 - 300 lense you get. set 1 is the best imho, but should start off with an older camera and just get better glass. the rebel series aint bad, but 20d - 40d are a big step up.

thanks guys,
incubus - the 70-300 IS USM one.

and hmm yeah, another reason i want to get the 40D is that i want to keep that camera for at least 2 years. So i want one that's built like a tank =D and the rebels definitely can't compete against the 10D-40D.

I have all the items you listed except for the 350xti, I have the 350D.

From your list I would go with #1.

Another good option would be,

Canon 40D $1,139.95
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 $ 329.00
Canon 50mm f/1.8 $ 89.95
Total $1,558.90

B&H Prices.

I'd say get set 1
Recently I also bought this Canon Digital Rebel XTi/EF-S 18-55mm and it's really not bulky/heavy compared to other SLRs. I have small hands so it fits mine pretty well (some people have complained about it feeling small). Canon camera is absolutely wonderful.

ok my advice is slightly different than many people here: wait 1 month for the new XSi/450D. It has better features than the 40D. IF you are a pro shooter, and really need the larger camera / higher frame rate (for sports for example), the 40D makes sense. But most likely, the XSi will suit your needs and last longer - because it's more up to date than the 40D.

Re. your lenses, you'll lack wide angle for walkaround pictures. 50 is good for portrait, but will be too tight in many occasions. You should consider a 18-50 2.8 from canon (IS) or sigma (non IS).
