Hey everyone,
I recently got a Canon 30d off of Ebay and I've noticed the shutter lags every once in a while, I wanted to know if this the new firmware messing up (1.0.5) or is it a setting error, or is there something wrong with my camera. Appreciate any and all responses,
Thanks,
Ryan

| Be more specific: what do mean by lag? What behavior, exactly, are you seeing? |

I have the focus on the thumb button, thus it should take the picture as soon as I hit the shutter, but even if I don't try and focus, I'll hit it and it will wait like a second and then finally take the picture, it is acting like a p&s.

I have read about that on the net, maybe even on this site. If I remember correctly it was a problem with the shutter button.

what do you mean by you have the focus on the thumb button?
Are you holding down the focus selection button while pressing the shutter button?

Should have bought a Nikon :) Had to do it man you left it open...
Contact the person that sold it. See what they say. How long ago did you get it? was it doing it right when you got it? Is the camera still under warranty? where do babies come from, WHAT!!!! |

| Ok, couple of questions. When this happens have you pre focused and the focus is locked on? Has this ever happen in manuel focus? How often is this happening? I have had the same issue happen to me if the camera feels it can't find focus, but that rarely happens. My guess is that the camera is searching for focus, finds it, then fires the shutter. The slower the focus on your lens the longer this may take. I shoot mostly with USM lenses that focus quite quicky. I'm going to check on something else and post back my thoughts. |

| I'm confused by your statement about the "thumb button" too. What mode is the camera in, and what lens are you using? Does the same thing happen regardless of what lens is in the camera? |

I've done it on manual focus, so its not a matter of focus.
My af start is on the "ae/af lock" button. Custom Function #4
I just got the camera a week ago and it has been doing it since I got it. I got it on ebay so even though its under warranty I can't get it because I don't have the original receipt, I'm about to write the guy I got it from and ask him about it.

Your best bet is probably canon, they will warranty the work for 6 months as well. |

| The original warranty is good for one year. You will need a copy of the warranty card and a copy of the receipt. The work the perform will be warranted for 6 months. |

Check what custom function 4 actually does. My camera has custom functions also. It might be loking the mirror up before taking the picture, hence the shutter lag. Just a thought.
Never mind, I just pulled up the manual and looked at this function......
Good luck!

Custom function 4 is changing the AF to the thumb button, mirror lockup is a different one.

Thanks for all the feedback, hopefully the original buyer got it less than a year ago, hes sending me the receipt.
What is the way that I need to get it to Canon for them to fulfill the warranty?

I called them on the phone and got everything lined up that way and then the service rep emailed me a form to fill out and an address where the camera needed to be shipped. Here is the number: For toll-free technical support, please call 1 (800) 828-4040 during regular business hours (currently Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 midnight. EST, Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., excluding holidays). Good luck!

Canon's Website
Click "Arrange a repair" Tell them the problem and they will send you an e-mail with all the details. I sent mine to them when I had issues with the LCD via FedEX 2nd day air. The returned it 7 days later via FedEx Next Day Air

Not when you ship to them (which I think no one does) but when they ship to you they will.
For the record: I think that if it turns out to be a defect covered under the warranty then they should refund shipping.

Totally agree, I owned my lens for two months and needed a repair andI had to pay for the shipping there, crap. If it turns out to be warranty then they should reimburse the shipping, oh well they did ship back overnight. |
