This is a small detail, but I can't find how to take the double wide tools palette and make it just one row, there is plenty of room below it. anyone????

Huh?

Maybe a screenshot would help?

I don't have Elements, but I would first look under Preferences, and then in the Help menu if it's not obvious there ...

I'm still saying huh?. Do other versions of elements let you do this? I'm pretty sure it's not possible in the CS versions. I've been wrong before though.

What does it say in the help for Elements 6? Or in the Adobe forums?

Right, I think that's just the way the tools palette is set up.

PS CS3 has two tiny arrows above the toolbar; clicking on those toggles it between single and double row. Since I don't see those arrows on your screenshot, I assume you may not have that option available.

there is a tutorial i watched on elements that has the tool bar in one row, but i can't find anything on it anywhere online. Oh well, as I said, it's a small detail.

I have Elements 5 and I've always had the tools in one column.
But this may work for you: see the little row of dots at the top of the bar? Click and drag on that. It seems to be for detaching the bar - when I do it, it goes double-column but I can float it around anywhere.

It appears that when it's floating it's in two columns but when it's docked it's in one. (Just looked in Elements 4).

From your screenshot it appears to be in it's floating format. Try dragging it into the toolbar just above it. That's how it worked in Elements 4 so maybe it's the same.
