I plan to get a Nikon D300, and an SB-800 speedlight. I have an old Vivitar 283 flash, and a cheap strobe head.
Do I need to also get a Nikon SC-28 or 29 flash cord, for full TTL function, or will the in-built commander thingie do the job completely? I dont want to have to use the on-camera flash, to trigger the remote flash.
What advantage would this flash cord add to me, if any? |

a) Commander Mode will not help you control the Vivitar or the strobe, only the SB-800/600/400/R1C1/.
b) The SC-28/29 will provide iTTL for the SB-800, but I'm unsure about the Vivitar and I doubt it will connect to the strobe head.
c) You try connecting a PC cord to the SB-800 to fire the Vivitar and/or strobe head.
d) Pocket Wizards. Final end all solution. |

PW's don't transmit TTL info though, right? |

Correct... If you need radio TTL checkout radio-popper (try strobist) or I think something that qflash has can do it also...not sure though.
