That's kind of like checking the mail box, finding it full of mail, then seeing that it's nothing but bills and flyers.

For me, I still get excited when I see one of my challenge entries has a new comment...but honestly, if it's just a one word blip it's an empty letdown.

So you'd rather have Zero comments than some number of "nices" or "craps"?

I write a lot of comments. Some of you probably don't appreciate them because I'll say I like a picture because (followed by a reason) and it usually isn't anything technical at all. I just enjoy viewing what others present. I'd love to offer to help some of you improve, but it's usually something that is best done outside a challenge and I'm not the most qualified, either. I've often provided some very basic (that's all I'm good at) suggestions, often in detail, but a significant number of the comments I leave during a challenge are never acknowledged so I'm not sure I should continue that practice.

It's been said many times, but a good way to improve your own work is to spend more time commenting (I'm not the best example of this, but it is true) both on the shots you don't like and those you do. Revisit the ones you liked after the challenge and see if the photographer left notes about the shot itself or the processing.

Please continue. It is very much appreciated. And I agree. I got to the point this challenge where I decided that I can't expect comments if I'm not prepared to make them. So I made a point to comment as much as possible (Obviously time allowing), but particularly if there was something about the shot I didn't really like, which, if it had been done slightly differently, would have got a higher vote from me, and also on the things I really liked in a shot. I do this because I know, that deep down, it's what anyone would like of their shots, even if they don't want to admit it. :D. - Said with tongue in cheek.

Non-technical comments (reasons why you like or don't like something) are just as helpful as the technical ones. It could be just something to look out for the next time, like a pole sticking out of someone's head.

Just to lighten the subject slightly... I think this has been the quote of the thread for me so far... well said Barry.

I completely agree. The non-technical comments help to develop your eye, and determine what elements make a good shot. I think both are equally important.

Well, I got a OMG,AMAZING on one of my shots, and I tell you what, it made my day. I was walking on clouds, it felt great.

I love getting comments, as we all do, but I will take whatever you have to offer, good, bad, crap, one word, a sentence, give it up to me, because everything that people say to me, I listen and can apply it as and when it is needed.

I might only be a beginner when it comes to PS, and I may feel out of my depth when I do comment on some PS shots, but I still comment, even if it is only one word. It acknowledges that I looked at their shot and studied it.

Myself... I try not to make generalized comments. I do my best to give the most constructive criticisms I can, when I see something I don't like, or something that is not done (in my mind) correctly. But I will also praise what I see that I do like and why.

I try to comment on 100% of the photos for a least one of the challenges each week. But I don't make generic sounding comments, I take my time and give constructive criticisms to every single photo. The only exception to this is if I give the photo a 10, because I tend to only give 10s to photos I can't find fault with.

It takes me 2-3 hours to go through an average size challenge, but I feel it's worthwhile because I find that I learn more my giving critique than receiving.

That's awesome! REALLY!

There may come a time when the enthusiasm wanes a bit, or time gets tight, to keep this up - but in the meantime, you Da MAN!

Seriously...very cool. :-)

Thanks, Craig. Now populate your portfolio so those of us who like to return comments can do so!
