Yes. At least, in the case of UPS. The reason being, UPS require the value and type of the purchase on their shipping form, so they know duty/vat is due. When the item comes into the country UPS have already paid Customs & Excise the duty/vat. I usually get UPS ringing me up asking for payment by credit card over the phone, which is essentially to reimburse them for forward-paying your duty/vat. This is for large purchases. For a recent small purchase from another company, UPS just asked for the money at my door.

That could prove to be a very costly endeavour. The problem with your proposal is that the buyer would have absolutely no way of proving that the items were indeed purchase in Europe and as such these items could be subject to seizure by the customs official.

I could be wrong, but I would strongly urge you to communicate with the proper authorities in this regard. I can assure you that whenever I travel I make sure that I carry all the requisite documentation with me.

Just need to work on the missus now, told her she can "have" the F717, but I get the impression she wants the same ammount spent on clothes :(

What's the VAT that one would have to pay in the UK? In Luxembourg I had to pay 15% on top. I'm trying to work out whether I should have my stuff shipped to the UK or wait 6 weeks and have it shipped to Luxembourg.

Not 100% sure, but it should be 17.5%. Don't forget there is the import duty related costs too......

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to weigh up my options here. I want 2 Canon 430EX Speedlites.
From B&H that would be 480$ + 45.75$ shipping. A total of 525.75$ or
£263,89 in GBP.
£310,07 is what I get when the VAT is added, with the additional import duty costs.
£337,90 is the price for them at amazon.co.uk with free super saver delivery. (Does anyone know a reputable shop where I could get them cheaper?)

So neglecting import duty the price difference would only be £27,83. I don't know how I did it the last time I ordered from B&H, but that time the price difference was much higher...

anything over £32 and you pay VAT. I ordered about $450 of stuff from B&H (incl shipping) and paid some £58 in tax. I still saved about £150 over the UK prices though but if you're buying a lot of stuff, like a whole new body/lenses/flashes etc etc then it probably is actually cheaper to fly there to NYC, pay the $45 flat rate cab fare from JFK to the city and buy it all in person. NY has a 7% sales tax (I think) so you're still saving cashola.

That's my plan anyways, except in MT where there is no sales tax :p
