In a hurry ... I suddenly need to find a bag for traveling purposes. The things I am looking for:

1) Fit under the seat in an airplane
2) Hold both laptop and camera (body plus maybe two lenses and a flash).
3) If possible, backpack style ... but I'm not overly picky.
4) Price matters ... but not terribly so.

So... it needs to be large enough to hold the important stuff, but small enough to fit under the seat of an airplane. I've taken a few looks around and my eyes are starting to blur. So many bags. Why don't they design a website where I can type in my criteria and have it find a solution for me?

Thanks for any advice.

Here's a good place to start looking Camera Bags.

I just bought the LowePro Fastpack 350. Haven't had a chance to take it on a road trip yet. Here are some additional images of the Fastpack 350. It is the larger of the two bags shown. There is also a smaller version (Fastpack 250).

The prices have gone up since it was introduced earlier this year.

I have a Lowepro Computrekker (I think that's the name) which is rated for airline carry-on. I actually measured it after I bought it and then checked against airline carry-on dimensions and it was close, but OK. Then, I got on the actual planes and it would NOT fit overhead or under the seats. These were smallish planes, a la CRJ. I'd hope the overseas travel, larger planes would have the actual, advertised room unter the seats. I was lucky that none of the four flights I was on were full, and used my puppy-dog eyes with the flight attendants to get a full extra seat for my bag on each flight.

I highly recommend the Lowepro Computrekker AW. I've travelled all over the world with it. On my last trip to Antarctica and Argentina it carried my 1D II with 24-70 attached to it, the 5D, 70-200 f/2.8, 16-35 f/2.8, 1.4x TC, 580EX, MacBook Pro 15", 80GB FlashTrax drive, Power supply for the Laptop, Spare 1D II battery, Spare 5D batteries, 5D Battery Grip, CF cards, CF card adapter and various knick knacks. It all fit safely and snugly in the bag. The bag looks inconspicuous and fits under the plane seats but weighed a ton with all that gear. If they had asked to weigh it I woulda been in trouble! LOL. Great bag.

PERFECT! That sounds like just what I need (with nearly the same equipment to carry).

My one concern... I have a 17" laptop (I could borrow a 15" laptop in a pinch). I see that Lowepro has a 17" version of the same bag. But I'm just a little worried ... will it still fit under the seat?

I'm *really* glad to hear that you've traveled all over the world with the bag though. That solves my biggest concern of being able to carry everything and still fit it under the seat.

Thanks for your help!

The 17" version might be a tad too tall to fit under the front seat, you might lose leg room. But it should fit in the overhead bins unless you are flying in the small puddle jumpers...

I just got a Lowepro, I did not try it under the seat. But it has 8 spots for lenses, place to carry laptop. You can carry it on your back or pull up the handle and roll it.

I got it for 200.

tamrac adventure 9. best bag ever.

it's a little big, but will fit under an airplane seat. has great side pocket for laptop, and the top open area is perfect for odd-shaped things you need to carry (lightsphere, laptop adapter, etc.)

this baby traveled all over southeast asia with me last year. i did bring a smaller "day bag" with me for wandering around, but this is great for traveling.

I know this isn't what you are looking for, but I want to say that I just got my Pelican RSV-283. Wow is this thing nice. The whole camera section is removable and customizable. The laptop compartment zips off of the camera compartment. The padding is nice and thick. Integrated rain cover. More room than you can imagine. Nice big wheels make it sturdy. This is a nice bag and it will be carrying my two bodies and all of my lenses plus accessories when I leave for Australia and Hong Kong on Saturday.

I couldn't find a review other than what Shutterbug wrote on it, so if you have been considering getting one then I highly recommend it.

I really like the way this bag holds a tripod (see pg 2 of the lowepro link above).

This is the one have and it is great in every way (comfortable on the back and I always tuck it under the seat in front of me on the plane) It holds my camera with lens plus 2 lenses plus SB600 plus the laptop area ... and it was 90$ when I got it:
