the only wireless trigger that is eTTL is another canon flash, teh canon ST-E2, or a sigma flash.
Somebody out there is about to produce some wirelss ttl trigger, but i don't know if it's out yet.
A Pocket wizard is a radio trigger - it can trigger a flash by radio when you push the the shutter button, up to 1600 feet away. You can also use a PW (well, 2) to trigger the shutter button on the camera from a remote location.

We use this one from Alien Bees along with it's receiver for our flash with the 20d. Works 90% of the time.... Though if there's much interference it's iffy. |

Pocket wizards will fire the 580 wirelessly, but not in e-TTL. You will have to set the power output manually. (also, I don't believe Canon flashes have PC ports. If not, you'll have to add a PC port to hot shoe adapter)
Now if you are wanting to use e-TTL, then you need to get Canon's remote trigger to do that. (at least that is how Nikon works and all I've been told and read says that Canon's system works the same pretty much)
But there is a company working on RF transmitters that can use e-TTL/i-TTL. The company is called RadioPoppers They're not on the market yet, but they are close supposedly. Here is a link to a blog of a photographer who was given a set to "test" out:

Check out strobist. They talk about pocket wizards and the suggestion is to blow your cash on the pocket wizards and buy cheap flashes. The cheaper flashes have the pc-cords and even can be set better.
(With Canon flashes, you can't actually set the ISO and they don't even have PC-Cords.) |

Check out the Quantum Q-Flash System. Some day I want to get a set of these. The advantage is that they work like Canon's e-TTL system for metering, but they use radio like PocketWizards and therefore are more reliable (no line-of-sight problems).
