I already have quite a few lenses so I'm not worried about saving cash to spend on lenses.
Its more for the updated functions from the 300D. |

I recently upgraded from the 350d (XT) to the 40d and am over the moon with it. The 3 inch screen is awesome for viewing shots to make sure they are ok. The 6.5fps is great as is the auto ISO in creative mode.
There is a new 450d due soon(I guess that is the Xsi in the US which you mentioned?) which has the same digic III processor engine and 3 inch screen as the 40d. The ISO on the 40d goes up to 3200 vs the 450d 1600. The 40d has 6.5fps vs 3.5fps on the 450d. I also really like the display on top of the camera on the 40d I find it easier to control the settings, wheras the 450d does not have that.
Personally I'd buy the 40d, I don't think the price will drop when the 450d comes out as it is aimed between the 400d (Xti) and the 40d |

heck, i went from the xti to the basic 20d and cant be any happier pretty much. the screen doesnt bother me cause all i need to see is the lighting on it. so if spot metering, and a bigger screen doesnt play a big role, then id sudjest getting a 20d and throughing the rest of the money into quality glass. youll save like round 200 on the 20d over the 30d but i wouldnt recomend buying any camera off ebay. same goes for glass. ppl who recieve "bad" or "dud" lens's always put them up on ebay for an easy sell. i just picked up a 20d body like new from some guy up n newport cali w/only 4k on the shutter for 500 which is a killer price for the use factor. i also threw the extra 500 i had left over in a nice ol 12-24 which kills. cant be happier with my choice and wouldnt think bout buying a 30d and haveing only 300$ to put in a pos lens rather than my brick of a lens. on the other side of the spectrum id say get the xsi over the xti for obvious reasons. n i think if you wanted to take pics and crop them down quite alot, id say get the bigger mpxl over the 20d. youll have more flexability on the sizeing when you finally print. if your gonna stick to posting 640x400 on dpc, instead of printing up 20x30's on a regular basis, then i wouldnt worry bout the mega pixel bs. also go n hold the xti vs the 20d and see if that changes your mind, in my case, that accounted for about 60% of my reasoning on why i dropped the xti for the 20d. on top of that, this may not be a factor to you, but i shot a couple events such as dances n ect, well when you have a tightly packed area and its starts heating up n your hands start to sweat, you will find that your fingures will start sliding all around the body and on the xti, i find that my fingures slide right over all the setting buttons which is a horrible disaster. i actually unintentionally changed my iso, my mettering, and my ai servo to one shot. this ruined alot of shot oportunities cause i noticed that they all changed up on me. haha. on the 20d and 30d, the settings are up top, and you can lock ur iso so you dont have to worry bout it (: my 2cents |

I see all this talk of the LCD and wonder what I am missing.... I rarely use the thing, only really to check the histogram sometimes - like snowy/sunny conditions when I crank up the EV-comp & check the odd shot for cut off arms when I was not sure cause it was too quick. I turned off the auto preview and it saves a ton of time on batteries. I guess it's cause I swapped from a film SLR to a dSLR without going thru a P&S phase that I never got used to having it.

1Dmk3 is what I want.
I started with a 300D, then a 30D (20D was bought used for backup). Now I have a 40D. I've used a 5D and played a bit with a 1D3 - man, that 1D3 is SOME camera! The 5D is nice, but it's old tech. You can get the same results (and more) from a 40D for 1/2 the price these days.
People rave about the 20D...not beacuse of how good it IS, but how good it WAS -when it was introduced. Like the Model T, it was a big deal, in it's day. The 30D is faster and better, but since it wasn't the revolutionary step forward that 'everyone' thought is should be the 20D still have rep it no longer deserves.
A 30D is very nice camera - ergonomically way better than a 300D or any rebel (the Wheel and Joystick!). Build is secondary- I dropped my rebel a couple of times and it never broke. Is a 40D worth $300 more? To me, absolutely yes. To you? Harder to say. How long will you keep it? Do you shoot RAW? Do you shoot in low light? Have L lenses?
Get the 40D IF:
you're gonna keep it a few years or more
shoot RAW (14 bit, more DR, etc). Won't do much for a JPG file.
tons better focus system than the 30D - but it's more noticeble in low light, and with GOOD lenses. (aka, L lenses)
I costs more now, but will be worth more in 2 or 3 years also. So the net cost of ownership is probably about the same.

well, on the d300, you are missing alot, its the most brilliant screen ive ever seen hands down. well close to a mp of dots, how couldnt you. haha but for close to 2 grand, id say youll be good off with the 40d for half that. i wouldnt consider buying a d300 over a mark II though. Mark II all the way!!, but the d3 is something else. in my opinion, possibly best dslr camera on the market. well good luck on ur decision. |

I think that is exactly true but I would either do the 20 or 40 cause apart from spot meter the 30D seems too close to the 20 IMO - I said 30 earlier caue the spot is one of the features the OP wanted. Personally, I would love the Nikon D3 right now cause it just looks like another big jump to me but sort of @12K for body & lens swaps, it's not happening :-)

A problem with changing brands is the same as everyone has, Canon lenses.
Obviously all of my lenses only fit my Canon.
Im not ready to switch brands right now.
I'm happy with the Canon brand.
I lean away from the Rebel Xsi 450D because of the grip size.
I have bigger hands and it just doesn't feel comfortable.
So I guess i would now be leaning tword the 30D or the 40D.

LCD is different (it's a HUGE improvement, if you're used to big you can't go back), the speed at which the camera starts, shoots, writes, works is 50% faster, the menus are different, longer batt life. I can't recall what other tweaks were made, and they were basically tweaks, but when I pick up the 20D I feel like I just traveled back in time a decade. Yeah, it's not that old, but pickup a decade old cell phone or walkman and you'll get the same feeling.

Yeah I just swapped over from Nikon to Canon, and don't plan on swapping back, I think Canon is just a little bit better and I plan on staying with them.

OP, beware!! If you buy that new Rebel, it takes SD, not CF.
That being said, I would take a 30D over a new Rebel any day (even if it does have live view) you will get a lot more of the image control you obviously want too :) |

Last year I upgraded from the 300D to 30D, at the time I couldn't wait for the 40D and thought I'd buy the 30D and perhaps upgrade later in the year.
Since receiving my precious 30D I've not for one moment thought to upgrade - she is more than enough camera for me.
I do LOVE the larger size compared to the 300D, but the weight did take me a minute to get used to.
I know you said you've got a few lenses so you don't feel you need to save for them, but can I suggest you reconsider?
I had what I thought were nice enough lenses until I put the 10-22 & 100mm on my 30D - BAMM! That was definitely the difference for me - I mean WOW!
I now understand why it's better to put money towards good lenses - SMILE!

I suppose the price for the 40d will drop when something new comes out.
But the price of the 40d has dropped from where it started when first introduced.
A catch-22 for sure! |
You can choose to spend your time waiting for the next best camera or you can spend it taking photos.
Up to you. |
