For those of you who don't have one (remote shutter, that is), try this from Instructables.

Hi,

I found a picture of a custom made release for my s5500
here (at the bottom of the page).

I have emailed the link on the page but suspect they will only mail inside the USA.

I Guess they could make something for any camera if requested (and the price was right).

Regards

Michael

I don't know why anoyone would go to the effort of sourcing the parts and spending the time building one when you can get pefectly good items from china via EBAY for more than reasonable amounts!

Hi,

I got a reply this morning:
"Thank you for your interest, unfortunately this is a discontinued item."

I'll just have to keep using the timer.

Sounds like you need A bit of bent metal

Alternatively you could try the Velcro solution

Thanks to Pug-H for the orgininal link, now I can make myself one because, pix-al, there's satisfaction to be had from the pleasure of making something, rather than just buying it.

_eug: There were two other projects on the Instructables web-site that could be combined to get you an IR intervalometer. An IR remote using a Universal Remote Control and an Intervalometer

im getting parts together to build an intervolometer, i already built a shutter release (works great), if you have a graphing calculater by texes instruments (Ti-81, Ti-82..,...) you can actaully program it to do intervolometering as well.

Well an intervalometer is one thing, but if you have a Canon Rebel or anything that uses a 2.5mm stereo plug, it's probably much simpler than you would think to make a remote shutter release.

In fact, you can just get a 2.5mm stereo headphone jack and cut the wire, exposing the metal. There should be three elements (one for each channel and ground). You can then use whatever you want to fire the shutter by simply grounding the correct channel wire. It's about as high risk as holding the shutter button.

The camera has two feeds and one return. Or one feed and two returns depending on how you want to see it. One feed is for the shutter half-press and the other is for the full-press.

Pretty easy to do a shutter release once you figure that much out.

I built one for my pentax equipment. It uses the 8mm stereo plug, so it can be done with just a few solders and about $10.00 worth of parts from radio shack.

One thing I did differently from most of the designs I have seen online was to use four-wire telephone extension wiring. I connected the stereo plug on one end of a short phone cord and left the male phone connector on the other. Then I did the same thing with a second short cable, but for the trigger buttons. With this setup, I can use a single phone cord connector to make about an 8 foot cable release. By using two connectors and a long phone cord, I have a 75 foot cable release. I can use the same setup for in the studio or outside to shoot wildlife. I am sure that there is an upper limit to how long you can go before the resistance becomes to great, but I haven't reached it using 3 long extensions.
