Not to jump into a fray ... but there is a bias toward lower scores at the beginning of voting ...
Some have advanced the explanation that voters are categorizing and go back later to adjust votes. Some say just tolls... Who knows...
But it would be interesting to see the average score chart from the 1st 18 hours of a challenge compared with the rest of the voting ...

I don't participate much and I'm not sure what the early voting has to do with anything really (I probably just don't pay attention), but of your 1800+ votes you left 202 comments. Looking through those comments they seem to be one word responses, for the most part, which probably don't have much more of an impact then just giving the photo a low score and not commenting at all. |

Then I don't know what your problem is, since you don't take well to criticism.
Interesting choice of language though, although I don't consider myself a boy anymore.

Oh thank you Johnny boy. I accept critism just fine thank you. What I don't accept is side stepping the issue.

I can understand your frustration with low votes and no comments, it can be frustrating and there are people(trolls) that purposely vote low. Is this post aimed at individuals who vote low, who don't leave comments or a mixture of both. A question to you, have you ever left a low vote(1-3)and not left a comment? |

Have a good time at dpc everybody. I wish you all 10's!
I'm done.

P.S. Oh, don't forget to continue to kick me after I'm gone. I'm sure it will help your photography skills.

Louis, I am one of those voters who regularly gives out votes of 3, and sometimes of 1 or 2, and no, I often don't leave a comment. Why? For three reasons
1. It is very frustrating to spend some time typing up a critique offering advice only to discover that the photo was from a perfectly competent photographer who was aiming for the Brown.
2. Sometimes the problems with the photo are so glaring that I know from experience plenty of others will have made the same points, and yet another comment will add nothing and make the photographer feel even worse.
3. And probably the main reason - I used to always leave comments where I tried to provide constructive advice on those photos I voted low, but after recieving fairly vitriolic PMs from a number of entrants, I largely stopped. Do you know, there are people on this site who take any difference of opinion as a personal attack, and respond by attacking those who were trying to help them.
Hope this explains - and please do not PM me.

All excellent reasons, Sara. It is discouraging. |

I'm new to DPC and haven't grown my commenting legs yet. HOWEVER, it seems that those photos that get 4-5 should get the most comments....in other words, comments would be most beneficial to them.
My current pic in one of the challenges is sitting at 5.3 with NO comments, I would really like an opinion on what I could improve on....but I guess I could always post up after the challenge to get a critique. |

I just came back to log out and discovered your little "don't PM me" warning. Don't worry I'll leave that to somebody else. Have a nice life. |

I understand the frustration that led to the OP's post. Early votes have been downright strange lately.
I watched my Eyes entry get absolutely hammered at the outset, only to rise significantly over the week. And, at the rollover, it jumped by a full .2, which in my two+ years here, is unusual.
I woke to a 4.2 for my Peace entry, which has progressively climbed all day today to about 5.0. I expected it to be in the middle-fives, which is where it appears to be headed.
It does seeem like someone is trying to stack the deck, or at least play with us.

Yeah, I love my peace shot but it's getting such a lame score! I smell a conspiracy... |

LouisP, it is clear you feel under attack, but I hope you will reconsider after you've had some down time. As trevytrev said, the voting thing can be frustrating. However, I believe that with vote scrubbing and other ongoing improvements implemented by the site to flush out cheaters, the trolling (whether from early voters or others), is not that bad. At least in a site this large, the effect of trollers is unlikely to be major.
Also, you had an idea and it kind of backfired. It happens. It may feel like an attack, but after all it was merely pointed out to you that perhaps this troll-thing isn't as conspiratorial (?) as you thought, as evidenced by your own voting and commenting pattern -- and the patterns of many others, I should add!

I'll step forward. It's all me. I've been doing it. Of course, I've been asleep most of the time while it's happening and I do go back to look at all the 'amateur' photos that I originally set at two or one, just so I can decide if the real crap is crap or if it floated to the top of the toilet so to say and really isn't as bad as that brown ribbon (said: deserved the turd ribbon instead)...its all because of that pet photo I took of Toshiba insanely thinking that it would be cute when I entered it in that challenge. I've never been the same since and I feel the need to have everyone share my pain at least for a few minutes until I can wake up, drink some coffee and then go change all the scores I put in earlier (not commenting on any of them at all for the same reasons that SaraR listed above.)
I truly am sorry for my behavior, but I will not change it for anyone even if I do get lucky once in a while and get a decent score on an entry. It all my dogs fault really.
;-p

I would like to take polite issue with some of these ideas. Just my own pov...
I can understand your frustration at #1, however the greater benefit is that you have analyzed the flaws in the other persons entry and learned something. You have also helped to establish yourself as part of the DPC community.
I can sort of understand #2, however you might make a suggestion that will help. I had one person flag me as a favorite photographer simply because I took the time to offer some suggestions regarding a flaw that he was not previously aware of.
As far as #3, goes, you can look at my stats and see I have a very high comment to vote ratio. So far, (knock on wood) I have never received an angry PM from someone over my comments. I have, however, received some very nice messages thanking me for taking the time, and sometimes asking me to explain my comment more thoroughly. (I have become the JPEG police lately, BTW. My most frequent comment is pointing out excessive compression artifacts and how to avoid them.) I'm not sure who is responding angrily to the critiques, because I have not run into them yet. Besides, if someone does not have a thick skin, then this may just not be the kind of site for them to be part of.

I see the early 1 trolls got you. I had this happen about a year ago. My first vote received was a 1. Damn fine image btw, did over 6 before the end of the challenge. Apparently there are several people with nothing more to do than vote all the images in a challenge a 1 right at roll-over to voting. Apparently they change them to something else later as my image had no 1's later on. I found a real quick solution to this problem. Turn off the update button. I turned mine off then and have enjoyed challenges much more. You can tell how well your image is doing by how many comments you're getting. And now it's like the old days of waiting for film to be developed. Oh, BTW, your screaming post is exactly what they're trying to get. I did much the same thing. Not any more. Joke'em if they can't take a *&^*

I tend not to comment on the lowest scoring pictures because they are, by definition, the most boring.
I comment to show appreciation, be facetious and occasionally if I feel I have something interesting to say about the image. |
