I don't do much over there anymore. I have a couple of things to sell but I dread listing them. Seems most of what's listed over there anymore is hong kong phooey and other 'business' sellers. I don't see much individual people anymore - could be what I'm looking at, but it's hard to find 'real' stuff for sale.

Well I have been selling and buying on ebay for years and like postage stamps they keep raising the freaking price. Well I know that I'm not the only person in the world but I will NO LONGER use ebay anymore. Their getting more and more greedy and it's not worth me pissing away my money.

I was tired of ebay a longtime ago... selling things are a pain not to mention the horror stories I have heard with paypal. You can sell something on ebay and basically the buyer can call in a say they never got the item then paypal takes the money back from you and your screwed. I have heard that story so many times. Also look out for scams from fake buyers. They send you a email what looks real from paypal that claims you have funds in your account. Dont click on anything in the email...........this happened to me but luckily I did not click on the link in the email. I had to read that damn email more then three times to see it was a fake. I even called paypal they asked me to send them the email, that was it never heard from them again.

I just got really tired of ebay lately..I have brought little things about 3 months ago but thats all. I wont bother to try to sell anything anymore probably wont buy either.

I just roll the fees into my quoted shipping costs ... doesn't affect the shipping that much and I still get the full value for my items.

But I've begun selling on Craigslist now, especially for larger things that aren't easy to ship and/or don't need the wider reach of eBay.

Outragous shipping prices turn me off an item or they did anyway. I would see a good or fair price on something and then see shipping to be almost the same price of the item or more and I would just pass it by. I'm sure there are millions of people that do the same thing.

I feel the same way -- I didn't say I charge outrageous shipping prices. I only charge my actual cost, so the only "markup" would be to cover the fees, which on small things (which should have low shipping charges) only adds a buck or two, and on big things (which would have bigger shipping charges) maybe adds a few bucks. My shipping charges are always very reasonable and it shows because I've sold everything I've listed for more than I expected it to bring in.

See why can't more people be like that then? I really wish that ebay wouldn’t charge so much. If they ever go back to the original prices I might sell again. Final value fees are ridicules.

Ebay has every right to charge more fees. They are bringing you the largest marketplace in the world. What other market can match that? Try selling something in the newspaper, or any other classifieds.

Paypal is also the most recognized merchant there is. Any horror stories are exagerations or old practices when Paypal was getting off the ground. You cannot just call them and say you didn't receive payment and get money. They investigate and take proper steps. Most people who get ripped off do it to themselves. WHen you see a Canon 5D for $299 what do you think is going to happen?

Do your research and check up on sellers and you will never get burned. Its the buyers job to make sure they are getting what they should. If you don't do research and you bid than you almost deserve anything that happens.

Its also the easiest method of commerce. You bid on something pay for it via paypal and they mail it. Some sellers are faster than others. When selling, what could be easier than posting an item having the auction end, collecting money automatically and shipping something.

Ebay is completely worth it. Nowhere else can you have access to 125 million registered users.

All good and true points! The people that are complaining about the fees are the business-style sellers who are dumping overstock at marginal prices to whomever will take the bait. I prefer to buy from individuals who provide adequate descriptions of the items. If you're selling something worth selling, and worth a reasonable price, the fees should be covered. My way seems to work, or else you can just bump your starting/minimum price up by an amount necessary to cover fees.

ETA: I have been an eBay member (buyer and seller) since 1998 and a PayPal member since 1999, and have bought and sold hundreds of things (not as a business) and I have never been burned by either service because I operate cautiously.
