Well at least you haven't hit my level of regression! I really, truely believe I should give up on challenges. I don't understand this score at all. My bread entry was a joke and totally deserved the brown (though a couple of others beat me to it), but this was a serious entry that I was so very happy with.

Peace

I'm contemplating (again) the Challenges Not Entered folder in the portfolio idea. I enjoy shooting for challenges. I don't enjoy the scores. Maybe that's an option, at least for awhile.

By the way, book is on its way!

That's a wonderful idea, and one I may follow suit on. And thanks!

On another note, I may with any luck be taking a job as an event/wedding photographer with full training involved. There is a very nice older couple who are overwhelmed with customers and they are looking for a photo enthusiast. They don't want anyone with any type of formal training as they want to train in their style. They've been in the business for over 20 something years. He told me they're averaging at least 45 weddings a year and turning down business left and right. I've only talked to them on the phone so far, but I think this would be fun, so wish me luck.

Kelli, that's freakin' awesome!!! I think that would suit you very well and I wish you the best of luck with it! You go, girl!! (This made my day - and it's been a really crappy one, so thank you very much!)

Thanks for this, Deb.

I've been feeling lately like my camera would be better served as a paperweight.

I've been getting some awesome comments on my work in the B&W side challenge, but my works have been so heavily Photohopped that I have the DPC guilt complex whispering in my ear that if it weren't for PS, I wouldn't have anything at all.

I've been unmotivated, and my work has been lackluster and uninspired......8>(

I don't enjoy shooting for challenges at all any more.

I just get frustrated and exasperated.

Huge congrats to colorcarnival on your Blue Ribbon in Bread!!! Woo hoo!

Deb, worry not about your sucky score in leading lines. I may be fighting you for the brown. I've got a 4.9. My only comment is from eyewave, and it's a positive one. He must have been my one decent score. :-)

Thanks guys! This is still all just in the talking stages, but I'm hopeful. They would expect me to buy my own equipment at some point, but I would be able to use their's in the meantime. They are using Nikon D80's, so that's another new camera to learn, lol.

I've been in the same boat lately. I think a break is sometimes a good thing - I may need to take one. I haven't seen much of your work lately, Jeb, but I thought you had some ongoing jobs in your community?

Kelli - that is SO awesome about the wedding possibility! Keep us posted!

Geez, I never thought I'd hear myself saying this, but what the heck's wrong with what you have?

It's not like they have D2Xs or anything, the D80 is still a small sensor camera......there are many terrific photogs and spectacular images done with your camera.

I could see that they may want you to have really good glass, but there's nothing wrong with that body if you stick L-Glass on it.....and much fabulous work has been done with "regular" lenses.

Well, the glass is actually the problem. When I say buy my own, I meant lenses. I can't use their nikon lenses on my canon and I only have the 18-55mm. But they still also want the camera to be either at least a 10 megapixal or a full frame like the 5D. There is no rush about the equipment though. Since they said they had a D80 I can use, I'm assuming that's their cheapest camera.

Okay....let me state that I'm trying to be helpful and supportive, NOT argumentative.

That whole 10 MP thing is kind of silly.....though I can sort of see it from a specs thing, I do know that the image quality I've been getting after processing and blowing images up to as large as three feet on one side without losing much in resolution, and that with a 6.1 MP body; I don't get that item of contention. My 8½X11s are freakin' AWESOME!!!!

It is what it is, though, and if they insist, so be it.

What you may consider as a possibility is to go the rental route. If Canon is what you know, maybe you can strike up a lease/buy arrangement with a shop or something, or even some such arrangement with someone else.

Put your name out there on mailing lists (DPC Forums, craigslist, DP Review lists) looking for a photog looking to upgrade and see if you can't do a deal for his/her older stuff.

They may be amenable for getting a little more over a long period if they get what they want out of it, and let's face it, sometimes you don't get what you want/should from used equipment.

Like get a 10/20/30D from someone who's going to a 40D.

Just some thoughts......maybe you can go the easy squeeze plan so you don't have to bleed all at once! LOL!!!

Or start a collection.....I seem to recall another Kelly getting some grace.

I got $20 towards your next lens/body!.....8>)

Here's a question that I may throw out to the general population here, but tell me what you think first. They did want to know what type of payment I would expect while in training and I didn't have an answer since I really have no clue. What kind of pay would you expect while training for a job like this. Obviously, they want it to be worth my while, and they want me to make money to upgrade equipment. At the same time, I'd be receiving valuable training and using their equipment. Any thoughts?

You might want to post a request in a more general forum - ask what "second shooters" get paid, since essentially that's probably what you would be to start with. And take the ensuing advice with large grains of salt and thick skin in certain instances. :-)

Rhino hide would be advisable...

Ask them what their offer is and whether you could possibly work a deal with them to work towards equipment that they recommend/suggest that you acquire.

Set up a contract so that both of you would be covered......them that ownership of the equipment is theirs for X amount of time, then yours after X time......insure the equipment; preferably a split 'til it's yours.

Just a thought.

Hopefully, some of these suggestions will help a mutually agreed upon working relationship develop!

Just wanted to say THANKS! to everyone for their kind comments and support! I'm excited that a cute little animal was chosen to win a blue ribbon. :) Anyway, what I love about you guys is that whether I have a high scoring or low scoring shot, I can always count on TS to leave a comment! Appreciate it!

Thanks Jeb. I think the biggest problem about the money is that they've been a husband/wife team without employees for so long that they don't really know what they should be paying. This is an expensive area to work in, with bridge tolls, parking fees (in Philly) and other stuff. It could cost $20-$30 dollars to park for a day depending on location (like Center City). The equipment idea is great, and something I will talk to them about.

Michelle, it is far more than a 'cute little animal' shot. It's beautifully lit with great bokeh and perfect focus. A well deserved blue.

Well, good luck with this.....I hope you guys can hammer something out.

Maybe it's just one of those things that you can just hammer out as you go.

Figure out what it costs to do the work/be there, what kind of hours versus the revenues generated, scale it for the learning curve, and see whether it's viable on both ends.

You're a bright child.....sort out the fine details, and see if they can afford to have a professional photographer on staff!

I'll keep my fingers crossed and sacrifice a chicken........sandwich to the photography gods!

Michelle: huge congrats!

Kelli: even huger congrats!

Now, let's play a guessing game. See if you can name this Team Suck member:
In the last 10 challenges, average score has been 5.86, or more than 0.1 above the long-term average. Those 10 results included a top 10, two 92% percentiles, and an 84%. In those challenges, there were 18 photograph favorites and 7 photographer favorites, including 7 favorites on a score of 5.5584.

And how about this one?
In the last 10 challenges, average score has been 5.56, or more than 0.2 above the long-term average. Those 10 results a top 25, plus an 84%, 79%, and 67%. In those challenges, there were 4 photographer favorites.

I don't think either of those records says "stop entering challenges." :P
