Hi i have a UK passport and have a trip to Italy planned for 29th March 08.

My passport is due to expire on 12 June 08

ive just heard that you need 6months remaining on your passport to travel?

i tried ringing the passport information line but it costs £1.50 per minute :(

any information would be great.

Thanks Jay

Never heard anything like that.
Anyway I got into the UK without a passport, just my ID card. Had the UK signed the Schengen agreement I wouldn't even have needed that :)

It's always advised that you have at least 6 months left on your passport when you travel, as some countries will refuse entry if there's so little time left on it (especially if their entry visa is valid for longer than your passport). However, Italy *might* be a little more lenient, given that they're an EU country, but I wouldn't bet on them letting you in.

Renewals don't usually take too long, so you should just fill out the forms & get it done. ISTR there is also an option to fastrack the application, but you'd need to pay more. The UK IPS office's website is //www.ips.gov.uk.

Do they even check passports for travel within the EU?

I've had to show mine when entering the EU from the US and vice versa, but not while traveling within the EU.

Call them, unless you want some second hand info from the internet! ;-)

I don't think this applies to non-EU citizens, but all citizens of countries in the EU can travel from one country into another without passport controls if both countries signed the Schengen agreement.

Jay -

Do yourself a favour and book an appointment for a rush service - it's not that expensive and their service is amazing (if you're in London that is). A quick trip to Victoria/Vauxhall (I think) and you're in and out with a new passport in no more than 20 minutes.

Then you have no worries for another 10 years...

I'm not an EU resident. I've traveled to the EU several times (Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France mostly) and have never shown my passport for entry after my initial arrival into the EU.

That's because those countries signed the Schengen agreement. The UK didn't, and thus you need either a passport or an EU country issued ID card to travel to & from the UK (however, you won't need a visa if you're already in the EU). Since the UK doesn't issue ID cards (yet), passports are the only option.

I did find it quite strange at first that my pals over here took their passports along for nights out in case they'd get ID'd :)
