What type of pay should you expect as a second shooter?
I may with any luck be taking a job as an event/wedding photographer with full training involved. There is a very nice older couple who are overwhelmed with customers and they are looking for a photo enthusiast. They don't want anyone with any type of formal training as they want to train in their style. They've been in the business for over 20 something years. He told me they're averaging at least 45 weddings a year and turning down business left and right. I've only talked to them on the phone so far. They would expect me to buy my own equipment at some point, but I would be able to use their's in the meantime. They would be letting me use a Nikon D80, so that's another new camera to learn, lol.
They did want to know what type of payment I would expect while in training and I didn't have an answer since I really have no clue. What kind of pay would you expect while training for a job like this. Obviously, they want it to be worth my while, and they want me to make money to upgrade equipment. At the same time, I'd be receiving valuable training and using their equipment. Any thoughts?

We had a thread on this recently, but I don't remember the title.
Numbers were all over the place from free while training to $50 regardless of training. Also depends on where you live. |

Well, I live in Jersey but most of their jobs are in Philly. I wouldn't do it for free and they don't expect me to. There will be cost involved such as bridge tolls, gas, parking, etc. You know this area, what you would think? |

I knew I should have expounded more...
Unfortunately I haven't done any wedding work in the Philly/NJ area, but I'll PM you with the name of a photographer I know who should be willing to give you the lay of the land in the area.
As for the thread I tried searching and came up empty handed. I'm glad Steve is paying attention over there. :) |
