Hi Folks,
I have a Nikon D300, and the 18-200mm lens. Im looking for a good lens for shooting sporting evenst such as soccer games etc. I want something in the region of 200-500mm and Im willing to spend upto $1500, does anyone have any suggestions? It doesn't have to be a Nikon lens.

Not to hijack the thread, but I notice that lens isn't in the DPC equipment database. I wonder how lenses get added?

Most people refer to this lens as the "bigma". I had it for a few years, and in fact just sold it yesterday. It's too slow for sports in my opinion.
Edit to add: to stay within your budget, you might look into the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 with a 1.4 extender. That will give you 280mm at f4. I don't have personal experience with this combo. For sports, fast lenses are very important (and expensive).

to get the speed up & keep the $$ in check you will be best off (IMO) with a 300f4 af-s
(and you still can add a 1.4 TC to get you 420mm at f5.6 ..)
this is a slightly older but great lens
(I have the non 's' but my neighbor has a the af-s & uses it for equestrian events )
if you want the versatility the 50-500 on sunny days & hi ISO will do you fine
