even though the article is related to magazine contests, it's even worse when regular companies use contest such as these to fill their stock image inventories, rather than hire photographers or license stock images. just the thought of 'getting a photo on a calendar' drives so many people to submit, without any idea as to how they are being taken advantage of or how much it is hurting professional photographers...

How do those differ significantly from the agreement here at DPC?

DPC doesn't use your images on calendars or other merchandise. The rights granted here are simply designed to allow the site to function (including keeping past challenge results intact).

I think this is the key wording that would probably protect us from a DPC "gone wild" that suddenly started offering images from the site for sale as stock. Although the "license, and sub-license through multiple levels" wording is a bit disconcerting. The real danger is that all this is the stuff of lawyers and lawsuits. Who knows what your rights are until they are argued. At great expense.
