Alright buddy. Don't try to bring irony into this thread. This is not the irony challenge. You can't get a ribbon. You're starting to get far too silly. You do remember SC rule of conduct #42 about silliness? Don't you?

So far, for those that have registered "numbers" and not opinions (I didn't want to infer from your words which choice you wanted), the break down is like this--

1. 4 votes
2. 1 vote
3. no votes
4. 1 vote
5. no vote
6. no vote
7. 1 vote -- comment is not helpful or somethng like that.

If you truly want a poll, unless one is posted (IF one is posted) why not simply type the number of your choice?

I am on board for option 2 With limits on number of uses
ETA:

Each person would have a limit of 4 zaps per calendar year
In some cases that would equate to a very very small (under 1%) portion of comments received IF the member actually chooses to use that option.\

And reporting to the SC when it is used (in order to track "habitual abusive commenters")

ETA - with a possible 6 as I think an option for people to choose NOT to receive comments at all would benefit the community as comments then could be directed to those who want them.

My vote = 1

But want to throw this option out for consideration. If Leroy wants to be able to delete comments. How about a 'My Preferences' check box to...

[]=Y []=N Deactivate comments on non-challenge images.

Just maybe instead of completely deleting comments they can be disabled for the members that don't want them. That way you are only commenting on someones pictures that really wants comments.

I know I want people's opinions/views!

In the absence of an anonymous, radio button stylee poll I'll simply provide my answer here:

1) Keep the commenting system as it is

Why a "death penality" option?

Wow this subject has become so very twisted.

It has become some people are so thin skinned that they do not want comments on their images. Not the case at all.

and if the subject was posed that way to me I'd be right in the number 1 camp.

Let me say first... I have no idea if this would be of any use, but I will throw it out there for discussion sake...

Another site ... that I am not a member of anymore.... cuz... of course.... there's only one site..... errr... I have been assimilated..... but I digress with humor....

Anyway... on that site they have an option to block/ignore user. You can block/ignore a user where you can see their photo but cannot comment or vote on it..... and visa versa. It seemed to be effective there, and interestingly enough not widely used...

Just an idea...

My vote-1 , but I think an option for no comments option would be ok too.

I'll register my vote as: 3) ToS rule involving commenting about human subjects (Bear_Music's suggestion) and SC liberal use of it.

I think this is a good method, since most amateur's here use friends or family members as models. People are people, not perfection. I feel that if you need to be rude about the looks/body type/etc. of the model, you should be forced to submit a full body nude SP to be picked apart by everyone else! In all seriousness, especially in the case of children, I don't want someone criticising my children's looks because I asked them to help me further my hobby. I actually self DQ'd an SP at one point because the comments were very hurtful and the comments were directed at me, not my picture/technique.

I have some horrible comments on one of my current entries, but there are no people involved, and I'm finding them quite humorous. But you have to wonder, how do these people talk to others in "real life"?

but the Photographer does not want comments would be cool. Then no body is wasting anybodys time with trying to help with comments.

1 No Changes to Commenting System in general and 6 Other idea: the option to hide a comment from public view, and is shown only to the photographer. But also, when subsequently viewing a photo, a tag line could be added at the top of the comments to the effect of: 'X comments private' or 'X comments hidden from public.' No comment is deleted. And to take it further, if you check the box to hide a comment, a dialog box automatically opens where you have to state the reason the comment is being hidden and this reason is automatically sent to SC. If the comment is offensive or in violation of the ToS, SC can handle as they see fit. Also though, they can spot 'abuse' of this system this way, as in someone hiding all comments that happen to be 'considerately' critical.

I also think there should be a box to check for a comment is unhelpful. This, if the commenter is sincere in their efforts and perhaps just a bit misguided, would actually help improve comments being left I think. I know I would not want a high number in that column on my profile:

# Comments:Made: 1,706
# Helpful: 397
# Un-Helpful: 1,309
# Received: 1,166
# Helpful: 1,159
# Un-Helpful: 7

1, 3 and/or 5 would all be acceptable to me.

also allowing people to opt out of receiving any comments would be acceptable to me.

Leroy says

"I love the recap AND Art's pics made me laugh out loud, literally. And the informal poll in the thread is silly and pointless."

Yes it is. Having ANY kind of a poll to change core features of this site because of a single incident is silly and pointless. Is the tail wagging the dog now is it?

I really can't believe how much of a storm in a teacup this really is. If people spent as much effort on their photography as they did in these threads we'd all be regular blue ribboners. End of.

silly as it may be... it does seem to indicate that not so many people support having a delete comment button, though.

i don't see how it is any more pointless than a formal poll

3. Totally agree with Kelli. One of the comments on an entry of mine, if I let my daughter read it, would make her so upset as it said she was a boy. Now the comment itself was not deflammatory or rude, but could cause upset.
