For those who use lightroom, can you use the presets such as Creative-aged photo in basic. I noticed that when you click it it adds a vignette and I've been told that vignettes are against the rules. Any help would be appreciated. |

Presets merely change the settings for you automatically. Anything a preset does can be undone just by going back to the Develop controls. So you can turn the vignetting off and make any other fine tuning adjustments to the image as well.

I don't think so. Pretty sure that would run up against the rule in Basic editing that states: "No “effects” filters may be applied to your image, with the exception of Noise and Gaussian Blur." |

Lightroom doesn't have filters. So it's not the same thing.
The Creative Aged "preset" he is talking about, is simply adjusting Hue/Sat/Brightness/Contrast and probably adding an overall tone to the image. You can do all of those in basic.
The vignetting, as I mentioned, can simply be turned off.

Well that's good news. I use SilkyPix for RAW files and it has adjustments called 'Color Mode' that I've shyed away from for Basic Editing challenges. The results can be quite dramatic and I figured they were sort of a special effect. Hmmm...may have to reconsider this. :-)
From the SilkyPix manual: [thumb]648676[/thumb]
When I saw "Creative Aged" preset it reminded me of the conversions available in PSP X2 that are under the Effects menu for Aged B&W, and Sepia conversions. I've stayed away from those as well for Basic Editing challenges because they're listed under "Effects". |

When in doubt... submit a ticket to the SC with your photo and let them rule on it.

Thanks for the advice, I figured that the color adjustments and the such are ok. If they effect the vignetting slider I just need to zero it out. I appreciate the responses and Leroy too who Pm'ed me. Trevor~ |

Bottom line, if all that's changed is color or tone, and that's done globally, then a "canned preset" should be OK. If it adds a vignette, like the Lightroom preset does, be careful to re-zero the vignette slider if you use the preset. If you are unsure at all whether a preset makes a change that's not global (made uniformly to the whole image) then do submit a ticket and let us review it, prior to submitting any entries using the technique. |

Thanks Fritz. BTW - Does anyone on SC have, or use, SilkyPix for RAW conversion? |

Still learning the lightroom program as I just got it not even a week ago. I found that you can just turn off the vignette slider so the preset doesn't effect it. |

Not sure...
...my own pix are 100% wool; coarse and a little abrasive. ;-) |
