Svetlana! So good to hear from you! Wish I could fly to Oslo to see your exhibition and of course meet you! Glad you're back!

Christian, take as much time as you need to get out of your funk...happens to us all. I know it'll be worth the time it takes.

*HUGS* to you both

*whispering* *nudge nudge* Peter, I don't think you're allowed to mosey in Europe; have to check the most recent European Directives on the subject . . .

P.S. Congrats, Svetlana, and yes, please do take more pictures . . . everyone should take more pictures. And write more words, too. Or take pictures of words, or make words into pictures . . .

All quiet on the Oslo Central front 22.00 hours CET.

Thanks for the heads-up, Bruce, but I think it's OK. It's Mosleying that's frowned upon.

Yay!! Well, I know not "yay" from your perspective of having to scan and edit more pics and transcribe more journal pages, but "yay" from my perspective of hopefully getting to see and read the efforts! I stopped about halfway through last night (something about persistent cats) but will pick back up again today.

(For other suckers, if you haven't yet, wander on over to Christian's portfolio, to this collection, and start with the first one to read the story.)

I was just wondering if anyone's found any interesting Browns yet? Here's some of my favourite ones:

02/17/2008 06:34:48 AM · #1789
The problem with those Browns, Jelena, is they're just fine the way they are. No need to re-do them! :-) I've been wondering how to improve upon those that enter an entire slate of plain black pixels.... Maybe white pixels instead??

Hints about going for the brown in the brown. How to win the brown by charliebaker

I could be misunderstanding this, but I think an easy brown is up for grabs in the challenge that ends tonite...only 28 entries so far. I might have to think of something!
02/17/2008 10:53:06 AM · #1792
Ok, I just entered for tonite's challenge. It will get trashed I am sure, but what the hell. When there are so few entries it is so much easier to get to one of the extremes in placements I could not resist.

ETA, did I mention I just got back from a shoot all day yesterday..then was up till about 4 hours ago editing? My judgement is not likely very good right now...LOL.

I offer up my browns to anyone who would like to use them:

I've entered Misunderstanding, and even considering there are just over thirty entries, I doubt I'll get a top ten out of it. In fact I know I won't. The the real question is whether I'll have another brown for my collection.

I'm sorry, but I have to say there are plenty of brown-ribbon winners that aren't good photos.

To use one of the examples that Jelena mentioned, look at .

Severe banding in the sky, washed-out color, very noisy, etc. The composition strikes me as fine, but the other details matter, too. To me, that one is a great example of a shot that could be improved enormously. Even just putting the camera in exactly the same spot, one could produce a nicer image.

I'm not talking about Christian's excellent art, Don's moody pieces, or even Gordon's recent experiments in blur. After all some of my favorite shots fall into those categories. But not every shot that scores poorly on DPC is really a great shot that the masses just didn't appreciate.

And for me, this is where the subjectiveness that makes this challenge inappropriate comes in.

Sure, this shot could be made more DPC friendly (brighter, prettier, etc. etc.), but for the challenge it was in, it was brilliant. It's supposed to be the earliest memory; should that be clear? Precise? Bright? My own childhood memories are bland, black and white but washed out, more feeling than preciseness of exact detail. This captures this; the banded sky is a wonderful denouncement of the importance of the sky to the memory. It wasn't important to the memory, so it looked "bad" -- don't look at it, that's the point. The point there, for me, isn't even the image at all, it's capturing the feel of trying to go back. Any remake of this image loses that, loses the content, for the sake of the form.

Don't get me wrong; I agree with Jeffrey that some browns are just bad images. But it's so subjective, so very subjective, that I think the "brown remake" challenge itself is deeply flawed in its basic premise.

I see Rob has already answered with pretty much what I was going to say. It actually fits the challenge kinda nicely. And it's very consistent with Stephen's processing style, too. But yeah, it could be made pretty for DPC, very true. I just don't know why.
