My hubby got me a new lens - 35-105mm AF lens. I don't know which one it is other than it's a nikkor but don't if it's the D lens or AIS. But there is a little tiny silver button on the lens itself. I know NOTHING about this thing, wasn't one I'd had on my list. Any pointers?

He said our friend sold it to him and it retails new for around 300 plus and he sold it to hubby for 50.

I feel bad now because I'm used to my 50mm MF lens and my 18-200 and have no idea what to do with this one!

Is this your lens? It looks like manual focus but it also seems to be a macro lens. :)

best thing to do is stick it on your camera and try it out... you may find that you like it alot for certain things

Yes I believe that's the lens.

I don't get how it works though LOL. It's not like a typical zoom lens and I was expecting it to zoom in more if that makes sense?

Not a good time to be shooting outside though I did take a couple shots with it this morning of my daughter doing some chinese pictograms. Doesn't seem very sharp though.

I have the same lens (the autofocus version), I bought it with my N90s a while ago. It's a great looking lens on film (works great with infrared film!), but I've had less than spectacular results with it on my D300 body.

The little silver button engages the macro, which is fairly useless. At the 35mm setting, hold the silver button and twist, and it will engage "macro" focus. The only neat thing is the slight distortion you get with it.

What don't you get? If we knew what you were trying we may be able to help more.

From the link posted:

Focusing and zooming control: via single rings for push and pull control. Dual coloured zoom indexes (orange and green) are provided.

Zooming is achieved by pushing or pulling the barrel rather than turning it.

I don't get what the little silver button is for- I push it and it clicks something into place. Really wish I had a book or something else that came with the lens. I feel lens dumb now lol. I'll have to get a hold of the friend dh bought it from so he can show me how to use it.

I was shooting inside with natural light, no flash. Lighting wasn't the problem so I don't know if there is a smudge on the lens or what, but the outside of the picture was blurred and shouldn't have been. I looked at the glass itself and didn't see anything so I'm wondering if it's on the other end. I have no idea!

Could it be that this is the auto focus version of the lens and the silver button is for switching between manual and auto focus?

Did the image look focused through the viewfinder?

Anti-Martyr owns the lens, he said it was for macro abilities. :)

no it's an autofocus lens. I think I've somewhat figured it out. Sicker than a dog right now so I can't go out and play. I messed around with it some more.

So basically the macro is useless LOL.

I told dh I'm still waiting on that 60mm. Maybe for anniversary in May. Although I"m not going to ask because we're building a new house up in Maine so wants go at the bottom of the list.
